About Skye Malone

Skye Malone is a fantasy and paranormal romance author, which means she spends most of her time not-quite-convinced that the things she imagines couldn't actually exist.

Born and raised in central Illinois, she hopes someday to travel the world – though in the meantime she’ll take any story that whisks her off to a place where the fantastic lives inside the everyday. She loves strong and passionate characters, complex villains, and satisfying endings that stay with you long after the book is done. An inveterate writer, she can’t go a day without getting her hands on a keyboard, and can usually be found typing away while she listens to all the adventures unfolding in her head.

Skye also writes YA urban fantasy as Megan Joel Peterson and is the author of The Children and the Blood trilogy.

The Valley of Decision
by Shannon McDermott

“A solid fantasy that wears its spirituality lightly yet effectively.”
~Kirkus Reviews (read the entire review here)

We hope you enjoyed getting to know a little bit more about the characters and the story-book world of The Valley of Decision. Did you miss any of the stops? You can check them out below:

Colorimetry - The Mountains, the Moors, and the Hills
If you ever travel north beyond the Black Mountains, into the kingdom of Belenus, you will find yourself in a vast and varied land, a country of laws unwritten, unspoken, and scrupulously obeyed...

Deep in the mountain Anuin, the smithies of the Trow house mighty fires. Those crimson flames imbue the stony heart of the mountain with heat, fill it with a pulsing red glow like living rubies.

Bookworm Lisa - The Fays
Belenus, the master of the North, does not often leave his glittering palace or his green hills. You are not likely, even if you roam his kingdom, to ever see him...

"The best story element involved the Fay, an elvish race who for once felt truly alien. She went beyond current stereotypes and really brought out the danger of these beings, even those one might count as allies. There were echoes of Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, elevating the stakes and the narrative itself."

Which of the characters from The Valley of Decision was your favorite to write?
The main character, Keiran the Captain of the Hosts. To even attempt what he did, a person would have to be either very desperate or very confident of his own abilities. Keiran is the second, and he has an extreme self-assurance, and sometimes conceit, that I enjoyed using. He’s also bold, another fun characteristic for a writer to work with. And because he is a very able man, and has reason to be confident, his occasional conceit adds texture to his character and makes him more interesting.

I Love to Read and Review Books :) - Ten Fun Things to Know About Shannon
(1) I was born in California but grew up on the East Coast.
(2) I have seven little sisters.
(3) I like sweet potatoes baked or boiled, with butter or with sugar, made into fries and made into pies. But I cannot stand them canned.

Wishful Endings - Dokrait and the Black Mountains
The Black Mountains are high and treacherous – so many sheer, soaring cliffs, so many monstrous boulders dangerously perched. Wolves teem on the mountains, spilling into the lowlands when the winters are long. Bears and the great cats prowl those hazardous slopes, too.

Kelly P's Blog - Interview
Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Pretty much. I was eight when I first decided (and declared) my ambition to write a book. Of course, it was years later when this desire to write took on the adult dimension of “This is what I want to do with my life, this is how I want to earn my living”.

Mythical Books - The Dochraitay
The Dochraitay possess the unhappy distinction of being the foremost servants of Belenus. They fight his campaigns against Alamir and the Islemen, they grow the crops and hunt the animals eaten by the Fays, they give up their children for the mines and the army and the palace of Muireach.

Brooke Blogs - Interview
2) What is your favorite part of the writing process?
When I take my scenes, written longhand in my notebook, and transcribe them into the computer, revising and polishing as I go. It’s easier than the initial writing, and I finish with a feeling of satisfaction. The scene is done! Until my editor gets her hands on it, anyway.

Coffee Books & Art - Interview
How did you come up with the title? Names?
The title comes from a Bible verse found in the Book of Joel: “Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!” For the names, I established this pattern: of Gaelic origin, unusual enough that the names would not be common in our own world, but not too unusual. I avoided names like Ruairidh because it just looks too foreign. Who would care to guess how to pronounce it? So I ended with names like Torradan and Artek and Belenus – different, but easy enough.

Mel's Shelves - Review
"There are lots of moving parts that came together in the end for a satisfying conclusion. I'm glad I had the opportunity to read this, and I look forward to reading more from this author!"

Long ago, the Alamiri tribes came from the distant sunrise lands – climbing nameless mountains, fording forgotten rivers. Their wanderings ended here, among the forests south of the Black Mountains.

The Written Adventure - Interview
3) What gave you the idea for The Valley of Decision?
The Lord of the Rings, much as it pains me to admit it. In those books, Sauron had legions of human slaves whose only purpose in the story was to fight the good guys (and get beaten). It’s not that Tolkien was heartless in his use of these characters – remember Sam witnessing one of them being killed and sadly wondering what his name was and if he even wanted to fight – but I came to think how good it would have been if Sauron’s slaves had staged a revolt. Why should all the heroes come from the free nations fighting Sauron? Why not from the enslaved nations oppressed by him?

Mommynificent - Review
"The characters were definitely my favorite part of the book. I really enjoyed coming to understand the complexities of the three main characters, who interestingly are all male. I also really enjoyed the unfolding mystery of who the Fay are and why they are a part of this world."

Deal Sharing Aunt - Interview
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
If there is one message in The Valley of Decision, it’s that we all have choices to make, and we can’t escape it. Not making the choice is itself a choice. My principal character, Keiran, faces the ultimate choice: Rebellion or obedience, God’s way or his? But all the characters have to choose, and their choices mean risk and sacrifice and (sometimes) reward – just as our choices do.

"Keiran, the Captain of the Hosts, was an interesting character. From the beginning of the book, I wasn't quite sure what direction the story was going to go in, and I didn't know what to think of him at first. As things were revealed and I got further in the story, I found myself rooting for him as a reader and enjoyed his character development."

In the uttermost north, beyond even the kingdom of Belenus, icy mountain peaks look down on the Coldlands. The Coldlands are not on our maps, not even the borders. The Alamiri do not venture even to Belenus’ home, let alone past it. But rumors come to us – from foreigners, adventurers, and far-travelers, brave, reckless, wild men.

My Devotional Thoughts - The Hobgoblins
One more tale? All right, my love; just one.
Long ago, the great father Athair led the first Alamiri up into the Rhugarch Pass. They were men of his clan, relatives loyal and strong. When they scaled the mountain to the Rhugarch Gap, they stopped for the night.
The men settled down to their rest; the fire sank into embers; the watchman grew drowsy. And a soft, soft pattering murmured into the camp.

What do you hope people take away from your books?
I hope that whenever someone finishes one of my books, they feel like they’ve been on a journey and it has ended well. Every story is about a character’s struggle for something, and I hope my readers will be able to feel that in my stories and be encouraged.

The Bookish Fairy - This or That
Chocolaty or fruity candy?
Chocolaty. Hands-down, 100%, all the time.
Get out of the house or stay at home?
Stay at home.
Winter or summer?
Can I pick spring or fall? I’ll go with summer.

Where the Black Mountains pierce the sky, they divide the south from the north, Alamir from the kingdom of Belenus. Belenus, the undying master of the north, commanded Keiran – the Captain of the Hosts – to conquer Alamir. But the Captain is deep in conspiracy, and he has his own plans.

Roots (Witchbound Book One) by Kelbian Noel

288 pages

Seventeen-year-old Baltimore Land just wants to be normal, but magic has other plans.

I don’t consider myself a witch, that’s my parents’ thing. I’ve never really believed in magic either. Sure, I tried it a few times. Fell for the whole “magic happens” thing. But it didn’t happen to me. No amount of rhyming stopped my parents from moving me halfway across the country. Not one spell stopped me from being labeled the town freak.

And worst of all, no matter how many times I begged the Universe to bring my twin back, I was ignored. Until now.

He’s back all right. And in a magical bind of his own. Not the magic-won’t-work-for-me kind either. In fact, it’s working a little too well. Too dark. Too deep.

It turns out our entire family’s magical roots run just as deep and my brother didn’t end up where he is by accident. So I’m going to help him. But magic isn’t really on my side. Nope. Once I finally get the craft under control, I’m expected to abandon the one person in the world who’s closest to me, just to save myself.

Sprung (Witchbound Book Two) by Kelbian Noel

336 pages

Since she discovered magic, seventeen-year-old Skye Jackson’s life is almost perfect. Almost. Even perfect has its glitches.

What happens when the one with all the power makes the biggest mistakes? Welcome to my life.

Four months ago, I couldn’t have been happier. When my parents got divorced, I wasn’t exactly thrilled. Especially when Mom married a guy half her age. But then I found out I wasn’t the average Joana. Discovering magic existed and, best of all, I could use it, made everything easier to deal with. That is until I got a little too spell happy. But what girl wouldn’t defend her best friend against a world-class creep? Now I’m stuck in a nightmare, forced to make life and death decisions I never dreamed I’d face.

Love the magic, hate the responsibility.

Who killed the infamous Johanna Cartier? Sémya Slotin is thrown back in the business of solving mysteries when she found her body. With the help of her best friend Polliannah Koch, DCI Ally Gibbons and the mysterious but extremely sexy Josh Heinz, she vows to see this through.

This was supposed to be an easy case...

Sémya Slotin had spent the last three years living in London with her best friend Polliannah Koch staying away from solving cases. After Hawaii, she was taking a break from puzzles, cases and mysteries that could potentially get her killed. Instead, she had been doing her second and third favorite things, drinking and selling expensive vintage wines and having earth-shattering sex with the mysterious, sexy, beautiful but ever so secretive Josh Heinz. Life in London was good....until her funds ran out. Too much wine drinking, not enough wine selling!

When fashion designer and adoptive mother, Annika Slotin, summoned her back to Paris to hire her for what Sémya considered being the easiest case of her amateur sleuth career, all she could think of and see was money signs and a well-deserved Cuban holiday once it was solved.
What Sémya didn't see was her stumbling on the fresh corpse of supermodel Johanna Cartier. She didn't think that male model turned fashion designer Julian Marais-Caldwin, who also happened to be Sémya's ex, would be suspected of brutally murdering her. Johanna was his girlfriend, his muse and he loved her. Sémya didn't see the dead bodies piling up or the conspiracy theories.

Sémya was a little rusty. But then again, it was supposed to be an easy case and she was going to solve it. One vintage wine at a time... Sémya Slotin was officially back in business!

Excerpt:

Josh found Julian in his office. He was about to apologize when he saw the picture on the wall. A nude of picture Sémya, a giant nude picture of Sémya! You could see everything but her face as it was shadowed. “You’re not serious,” Josh murmured.
“It’s some of my best work,” he smirked back. He had a bottle of Jack Daniels with him and had obviously been drinking some it. Very American of him!
“You’re staring the naked body of your ex-girlfriend every day? That’s sick,” Josh told him. But the photograph was beautiful. He couldn’t believe that Sémya let him do that.
“It’s art. Sémya and I had history; it’s not a big deal,” he shrugged.
“Ten years later and you’re still holding on to this…it’s a big deal,” Josh said. He was ready to take it down when Sémya got in the room.
“What is this? Note comparing time?” Sémya said. She looked at the photograph, “Julian you’re bigger but Josh is better. And I’m not just saying that because you were my first. You were a good lover ten years ago and but Josh is just the best I’ve ever had.”
Wow that wasn’t nice… but Josh couldn’t wipe off the grin on his face.
“What the fuck! Who says shit like this, Sémya?” Julian said back.
“I don’t know…it’s not a big deal, you just have my tits on display for everyone to see. But you couldn’t pick up the phone in three years to call me?” she said matching his tone.
“He’s the best you’ve ever had! That’s a line if I ever heard one,” Julian told her.
Yes, it is…“Hey… don’t talk to her like that. She’s been busting her ass to save yours for weeks!” Josh told him then tried to take the photograph down but Julian stopped him.
“We were good together.  It reminds me of how good we were,” he whined. “No one comes here but me and the cleaning lady. And only people who had seen you naked would know that it’s you.” He sat back on his desk. “Really he is better? We had fireworks, Sémya!”
Josh shook his head in disbelief. Is this guy for real?
She chuckled back. “I loved you so much but I was such a foolish girl. I mean I used to write you poetry. But you didn’t love me back. How could you? You didn’t even love yourself back then. But that sure had changed.” Her chuckle turned into a bitter laugh. “What the hell is going on with Eileen? You’re fucking her? She’s barely twenty-five and oh…are you insane?”
“It’s none of your business. Eileen is a great person; I wish I met her before Johanna.” He took out a file and threw it her way. “She gave it to me earlier today,” he slurred.
“You did meet her before, six months before to be exact…Johanna’s medical records, it only took her five days,” she said picking it up.
“Whatever Sémya, I’ll leave you to your new boy toy wonder.” He intentionally bumped into Josh on his way out, his bottle of whisky in his hand. That was that.
“The best, yeah?” he smirked taking her in his arms.
“This isn’t news to you,” she grinned back.
“I know, but it’s nice to hear you say it when we’re fully clothed,” he winked. He kissed her neck and she stiffened. “What’s wrong?”
She was looking at the medical report. “I know who did it,” she said looking up with a raw resolve in her eyes, “I know who killed Johanna Cartier.”

Excerpt:

John adjusted his earpiece when he saw Sémya and Polliannah getting out of the car. He has been spying on them for over a month now. He realised early on that it was easier to do in Chelsea, close to their store, than around their flat in North London. There, someone may notice him or worst recognize him. He lowered his head and looked away as they passed him. Polliannah stopped a couple of steps up when her phone rang and Sémya crossed her arms sipping her coffee.
They both looked like they had a long night. Polliannah adjusted her mini dress and sighed heavily before answering. “Wie bist du Mamma9?” she said rolling her tired eyes at Sémya. Her almost daily calls from her mother Petra Koch… {9.How are you Mom?}
She gave Sémya the keys to the store. “Weak Sauce!” Sémya teased and ran across the street to open their store.
“You know I want to speak in English with you, Nannah,” John heard Polliannah’s mother say through his earpiece, the magic of modern technology as long as he was close enough. The small café not far from their store was perfect for this. “Yes, I am fine. Are you? You sound tired.”
“Sémya and I finished that nice bottle of vodka Connor sent me last year for my thirtieth birthday,” she laughed back. She yawned and stretched her body, revealing her long sexy legs. “It was good stuff.” Connor Ivan Guryev was Ivan Guryev’s second son after Dmitri, his eldest. “What can I do for you Mama? We’re about to open the store and we have to do our inventory–”
“Your father’s offer and mine still stands, Nannah. We know you need the money and your family needs you,” Petra said.
“Money with strings attached. Thank you, mama but no thanks,” Polliannah told her mother for the twentieth time.
“All right Liebling. You take care10,” Petra said. {10.Darling}
“I always do mama. Please do the same,” she told her and disconnected the call.  Each time her mother called, John was convinced that she would finally give in and let them help her. Each time she had proved him wrong. She had been gaining his respect a little more each day.
Polliannah hurried into her store so John adjusted his earpiece so he could hear Sémya as well. It was Sémya’s turn to deal with a call from her family. By the sound of it she was talking to her younger brother Aaron Slotin. He could see her nervously pacing around the shop floor through his small goggles. “Putain11! Aaron, what time is it in Toronto anyway?” she asked him.
“Sémya Louise, please do this for me. Mother just wants to talk. She said she needs your help and you’re the only one who could do it,” he said. {11.What the fuck!}
Sémya covered the mouthpiece and turned to Polliannah. “Did you say yes?” Sémya asked her. Polliannah shook her pretty head and left her for the backroom. “All right, p’tit frère12, I’ll hear her out but I’m not promising anything. I’ll pick up the next time she calls,” she said and sighed. {12.Little brother}
“Actually… eh… she wants you to go Paris and–” Aaron babbled.
“No!” Sémya yelled and almost threw her phone across the room. John couldn’t help but laugh. These women had been entertaining him for the past five weeks. Even if he had a job to do, he had come to like them and their antics. “She can’t summon me like I’m still a teenager...I’m not paying for the trip,” she finally told him after she calmed down.
“She booked you a Standard Premier Train ticket to Paris for tomorrow morning,” he told her. Sémya was visibly fuming. “Non-flexible…leaving at 7:31a.m.”
John almost dropped his binoculars he was laughing so hard. He looked at the café’s manager. He had paid him a large sum of money for his silence. But Dovos’ men to do not leave witnesses… he would have to take care of him eventually.
Sémya finally hung up with her brother. “Weak Sauce? Are you alive in there?” she shouted toward the backroom.
Polliannah emerged looking a little green. “Fucking Russian Vodka…”
“Weak Sauce, did you puke again?” she teased back.
“Call me Weak Sauce one more time and it will be the last thing you’ll ever say to me,” Polliannah threatened and sneered as she sat behind the cash register.
“Why? Are they finally shipping your foreign arse back to Mother Russia? I tipped off immigration months ago!” she laughed back.
“Ah! The joke is on you, I’m here as a German citizen not a Russian one,” she said.
“So I’m going to Paris tomorrow… do you need anything brought back?” Sémya asked with a total lack of enthusiasm. Polliannah instantly lighted up. “Something we can afford?” Sémya added purposely.
“Sanka original… I’m sure Annika can spare a little dress,” she said.
“Well you can ask her because I won’t,” Sémya told her and walked to the backroom.
“Forget that I’ve ever mentioned it!” Polliannah said back.

Then she wrote the other name. “FREGG,” she muttered and felt a chill travelling down her spine.  The Sémya, you’re on the right fucking track chill…
She turned on her laptop and called Ally, “DCI Gibbons, how’s your Sunday so far?”
“This is not a social call, is it?” Ally said.
“No it’s about the case here or maybe a five year old case at the Dovos family island,” Sémya told her.
She heard her shift around. “I’m listening.”
“What do you know about FREGG and the Dovos family? More importantly, what access do you have?” she asked her.
“FREGG is a myth… a ghost agency or organization,” Ally told her.
“Yes, except for the fact that it is not,” she chuckled back. “I researched them sixteen years ago when I was investigating my stepfather’s murder. They’re real, but also that powerful.”
“Alright… why do you need my access?” she asked.
“Hacking the Metropolitan Police Service’s server, what else?” There was no point lying to her. She didn’t want Ally to get in any trouble. She needed access so she could get in then do her thing. “Ally, your access can buy me a whole sixty seconds more than the thirty seconds I could get away with,” she added.
“Sémya, I like you… but not this much,” she told her.
“Ally… I just need to find some breadcrumbs. Your access will help me to be invisible, but I’ll erase my presence afterwards,” she said and started to type.
“What does FREGG stand for?” Ally asked her.
Sémya smiled, she was getting to her. “The founders’ names, Fenton, Reginald, Edgerton, Giadi and Gaumont. Obscenely rich families who decided to create their own crime-fighting agency with bottomless deep pockets. They have governments backing, especially after the Second World War. It was one of the best secrets of the Geneva Conventions of 1949.”
“The rumour is that it was created in 1950,” Ally laughed back.
“It was formed in 1932 but was an epic failure… you know Switzerland back then,” She accessed the Metropolitan Police Service server and entered Ally’s credentials and paused.
“How do you know all this?” she asked.
“How do you not?” Sémya laughed. “So do I have your consent? Gaumont, one of the legacies went to school with me, that’s how I got the information. He was sweet on me and I had a case to solve.”
Ally let out a loud sigh. “What do you need from me?”
She finished her bottle of wine. “Nothing Love, just your consent.” Sémya said and typed Ally’s passcode. “I’m in… timer ninety seconds. I need to use a clearance level higher than yours. How about your boss? James Connelly. He’s chummy with Heinz.” She typed as quickly as she could. She hadn’t done this in quite some times. The rush was invigorating. “Okay, so five years ago, The Dovos… What type of files do you have for me, Jim?”  She kept searching and found more classified reports about an attack and bombing on The Second’s birthday. “There was an attack… I’m downloading as we speak… The Guryevs were there… your boss’ clearance is four times higher than yours… it doesn’t make sense!” James Connelly had NCA, National Crime Agency, clearance, as well as MI5 and NDEDIU access.  He was only supposed to be a Chief Superintendent.
“Forty seconds, Sémya.”
“Alright, I’m there… James William Connelly? He’s in the report, Ally... Also…” she kept typing and downloading the files to her servers.  “Ten seconds… fuck! I need to get out. I’m cleaning up… and out!” The rush was making her hands trembled.
“What did you find?” Ally asked. Sémya could hear from her voice that she was excited too.
“Someone attempted to kill the Dovos family five years ago… and Ally, your boss was there. I gotta go.” She hung up.
Sémya looked at the info in front of her. The files were encrypted, but she could try to make a few deductions. CS James Connelly only took the files he could read and only the ones with his name on it. They said yesterday that John shot him, was it when it happened? Did he go there on his own or with a team? Was it some type of suicide mission? She searched for any mentions of other names. If he got shot there, someone had to get him out. Do I have to spell it out for you, Slotin?
FREGG was an ‘elusive crime fighting’ agency. They enjoyed blending in plain sight; covert missions… like dismantling a human trafficking ring in Hawaii.  She slowly got up and went to her board. “Josh Heinz, James Connelly equal FREGG,” she muttered as she wrote in her own code. “So who did it? FREGG or Guryev’s?”

The Camellia Resistance by A.R. Williams

Title: The Camellia Resistance
Author: A.R. Williams
Genre: Dystopian, Urban Fantasy

The Camellias is a trilogy set in the New Republic of America. It all starts with Willow Carlyle, a committed employee of the Ministry of Health. When she gives into temptation in the fall of 2044, she is completely unprepared for the consequences. Unemployed and isolated, Willow struggles to make sense of her sudden downfall. An encounter with a member of the Camellias, a resistance group living outside the bounds of Ministry-approved regulation, immerses her in a world she didn't know existed. As Willow learns more about her personal history, she uncovers a secret that rocks the Ministry of Health to its core.

Excerpt:

Had it been yesterday? No, more than that. The conference started on Monday, she’d met Ven on Tuesday and now it was Friday morning. In three days, she’d gone from Willow Jane Carlyle, keeper of rules, writer of policy and regulation to this wanton, wild-haired thing she barely recognized. She hadn’t even bothered with the blow dryer or straightener for the past two days. She flexed her muscles and stretched. The bruise on her hip ached, but even that held a certain sweetness. A clumsy misstep over some wires, vertigo, the sharp edge of the vendor’s table, and Ven’s un-gloved hand at her bare elbow. That’s all it took.
It was clear she needed the steadying once she looked up into his eyes, as if the shock of his skin on hers wasn’t sufficient to knock the wind out of her. Her mouth had opened and closed, like a fish in an aquarium, but no words came out.
“Well, hello.” He spoke like he’d been waiting to meet her. Like they were long-lost childhood sweethearts, meeting again for the first time in years. “Um,” she’d said in return, blushing. “Are you okay?” She’d watched his mouth make the words, she’d heard his voice as he said them, but he hadn’t let go of her elbow and that was all she could absorb. She looked down at the edges of his nails, cut close, clean and naked, the pads of his fingers still pressed against her skin. “Oh, sorry.” He dropped her elbow abruptly, apologetic at the social gaffe, but not before she’d caught a glimpse of the bare skin at the base of his thumb. A clean slate.
When she looked up again, he was looking right at her. At her. Not her hand, not her swaddled curves, but at her. It was brand new. She wasn’t the kind of woman men approached. It was a self-reinforcing fact. She didn’t smile at strangers and only looked people in the eye when she had to. She wasn’t ugly, but she didn’t have “it,” whatever the “it” was: that thing that hooked a man from across the room and reeled him in. Reserve she had in spades. Analysis, observation, method. But the flirtation gene that had served her mother so well had skipped her generation. All she could do was stand there and stare. “Let’s get out of here.” He leaned over, a truant conspirator, and extended a hand. Without even thinking, she reached down, pulled off her glove, and wiped the powder and sweat on to her pants. Causal as a six-year-old, she placed her palm in his hand. He’d steered her through the trade show. They maneuvered past vendors displaying the newest in latex glove technology, body-condom manufacturers highlighting the latest in ionic anti-viral coatings, and signs announcing SaniCheck’s sponsorship of the whole affair. She didn’t even speak to the staffers at the Ministry’s public health education booth as Ven led her out the double doors and into a crowd of protesters. He’d stared at what appeared to be the leader, a vacant-eyed Asian girl with hair like an inky dynamite blast and an incongruent flower tucked behind her ear like a crumpled tissue, as if daring her to challenge him. The girl had met his eyes coolly, then waved her hand, unblinking. The crowd parted silently, and they passed through the center of the tangle of placards and slogans unmolested. Willow had turned back to look at the backs of the protesters. “There’s no vaccination for the IdeaVirus,” one sign announced as it bobbed over a hooded head. What had the weather been? Willow couldn’t remember. All of her attention had been focused on the pleasure emanating from the nerves in her palm.

The Camellia ResistanceThe Camellia Resistance by A.R. Williams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

First, I would like to thank the author for giving me this book for an honest review. I love fantasy book of all kinds, and of late, Dystopians have become a favorite among them for me. The storyline is good, and different than most since STD's play a major part in this story. The characters are well developed and written. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

Author Bio

A.R. Williams is obsessed with language and myth, not just playing with words and making up stories, but with the real-world impact that the words we use have on the way we live our lives.  Words are the only things that never get boring, an endless puzzle with no right answer, and an infinite variety of ways to get wrong.  Writing is the only thing she has wanted to do consistently: other hobbies, such as sewing and photography, become alternate means to feed the writing habit. Ms. Williams feeds her obsession with curiosity: people, philosophy, technology, psychology, and culture.  Living in Washington D.C. is a good source of inspiration.  From the sublime heights of arts and achievement available for free at the Smithsonian to the bureaucratic banality of Beltway politics and scandals, it is a great city for fantasy, possibility, power, and consequence—ideal fodder for the fictional life.
As a teenager, Ms. Williams drove her parents crazy with her taste for adventure.  Her father questioned her taste in crushes once and she told him “don’t worry, it will just give me something to write about later.”  That approach eventually led to a cross-cultural marriage that failed spectacularly – not on the promise of love but on the reality of trying to negotiate contradictory assumptions about everything.  The subsequent divorce, combined with her emergence from a conservative Christian subculture, eventually evolved into the first book in the Camellia Trilogy. Ms. Williams lives in-between an ordinary external life filled with time cards, meetings, and deadlines; and an extraordinary imaginary world where anything is possible, and everything is fueled by music.  Language is our only means to bridge the distance between ourselves and others.  Imagination, the co-creation that happens between a writer and reader, is alchemy.  It is an aspiration that never gets old.
From an eclectic mix of upbringing, genetics, experience, and the best possible luck in friends and family, Ms. Williams writes with the hope of doing for others what her favorite authors did for her: provide company through difficult days and create a sense of wonder and possibility when everything seems limited by circumstances.
