Death Dealer by Ashley Robertson

Book Title: Death Dealer
A Death Angel Novella—Book 1
Author: Ashley Robertson
Published: July 1, 2013
Genre: Adult/Paranormal/Romance

Blurb:

Death: a word Mia Baron was all too familiar with since the murder of her parents when she was a young girl. Her drive for vengeance was the reason she became a Death Dealer—a soul guide through the spirit realm—signing her life away in her own blood. Pain forged a concrete wall around her heart and no one or nothing would ever penetrate it…until she got what she desired most—revenge.

Deacon Gage craves justice for his own horrific tragedy that forced him into the same life Mia chose, with the same promise of vengeance dangling just out of reach. His expert training makes him an Elite—one of the few Death Dealers to ever achieve such a status—and no one can shift his focus from the blood he seeks.

But when the two are partnered for yet another job and a heart-shattering case rips open Mia’s heart, Deacon realizes he’s the only one who can save her…at a price that might be too much to pay: opening his heart to her. The clock is ticking and her life hangs on the balance of whether he can truly let go or will hold onto his desire for blood.

My Review:  July 26, 2013   ~ Review Copies ~

Death DealerDeath Dealer by Ashley Robertson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I want to thank the author Ashley Robertson for giving me this book for reveiw. I really enjoyed the story and I like Mia and Deacon they are both death dealers and drawn to each other. The concept is great, I feel that more could have been added to the story to give it much more depth and details. I understand that it's a novella, but it just needed more to me. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Savannah escaped a kidnapping but her best friend Clark—the man she secretly loved—didn’t. Guilt-ridden and changed after the event, she gives up her dream of teaching and earns a position in the F.B.I as a profiler. When she’s targeted by the very same kidnappers wishing to finish the job, she is armed with her skills, backed by her first love’s twin brother, and forced to revisit her demons when Clark’s ghost appears.

After his twin’s murder, Officer Carey Carr loses more than his brother. Savannah avoids him for a decade. Her return—and her steaming-hot body—stir brand new feelings in Carey. But Clark’s reappearance has Carey battling to control his primal desires around the woman his twin loved.

As Savannah and Carey, with Clark’s help, embark on a cruel game of cat and mouse with the kidnappers, the twins come to an understanding that involves Savannah and more pleasure than the three of them have ever dreamed.

EXCERPT
Savannah pressed the cold glass of iced tea to her neck. It was a sweltering summer, and her parents’ air conditioner was on the fritz. Which chased her over to Carey’s while they worked on their case after hours.  I wonder if Clark has something to do with that. The case had become an all-consuming driving force for both of them.
Frustrated by their inability to move forward they’d opted to take a break.
“When are your parents going to get the air fixed… not that I mind.” His gaze raked over her. “I like the view.”
“Flirt. I just spent the drive over here sweating like a pig. I doubt I’m much to look at.”
“Don’t underestimate your appeal.” The gravelly quality of his voice touched her in places long unattended. Clearing her throat, she attempted to refocus her attention on anything other than the sexy man who sat across from her in a white tank top and a pair of sweats. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t keep her gaze from his tats.
“Okay, I have to ask. What do the tattoos mean?”
“Aaah. The million dollar question.”
“Is it a secret?” Intrigued, she sat up straight.
“No, just personal.” Red appeared in his cheeks. “It’s a memorial.”
“That makes perfect sense. Why are you embarrassed?”  She arched an eyebrow.
“It’s for the three of us… I sort of felt like we died with Clark.”   He placed his hand on his arm. “The rose in the Rosary represents you.”
“I’m on your arm?” she whispered. Touched, she covered her mouth.
“I couldn’t do the piece without you. It didn’t feel right. When I first started work on this I knew I wanted us all on a rosary, connected despite everything that went down.”
“Carey.” Unable to find the right words, she shook her head.
“See, this is why I didn’t want to talk about it.” He rubbed the back of his neck.
“What have you been telling people all this time?”
“That it’s a memorial tat for my twin brother. They don’t ask for more detail after that.”
“Am I the only one who knows?”
“Yeah.” His jaw was tensed. He refused to meet her gaze.  Setting her drink on the table, she walked over to him and sank onto the arm of his chair. She traced the rosary that faded into the background of the brightly-colored, old school sailor designs that surrounded it. There were red stars, a red and blue swallow, and a set of dice.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
He tilted his head up. Their gazes locked.
“Want to hear something funny?”
“Sure.” He nodded, his voice equally soft.
Stepping back, she pulled up the hem of her tank top and lowered the top of her cutoff shorts.  A delicate brown branch with three blossoms, black, red, and pink, graced the curve of her hip.
“For us?”
She nodded. A slow smile erased the pinched, austere expression he’d held moments earlier.  He extended a finger and traced over the pattern. She sucked in a breath.  A searing heat spread through her body. Her pulse kicked into overdrive and her muscles tensed. His finger crept lower, brushing the top of her shorts. Holding her breath in anticipation of more, she watched him through half closed lids.
“Savannah?” Raspy and uncertain, his question asked for permission.
“Y-yes.” The words were out before she could over think them. His head dipped and his tongue shot out and caressed the path his digit had traced.
“Oh.”  Her nipples hardened and her pussy grew moist. Years of neglect combined together to overthrow her objections. Desire exploded inside her like a bomb, superseding her common sense. Latching her fingers onto his shoulder she allowed her head to fall back, enjoying the feel of his mouth. He nipped her skin, moving across her waist. The stubble on his chin tickled where it grazed her delicate skin. He paused at her belly button and dipped his tongue inside. Her stomach muscles quivered, and her toes curled in her flip-flops.  He pulled back, blowing on her wet skin.
“Carey.”The wobbly words made him look up.
“Do you want me to stop, Vannah?”
 “N-no.”
Holding her stare, he brought his hand up and cupped her pussy. She gasped.
“Still okay?”
Unable to speak, she nodded. He began a massage.
“Oooh.” In need of relief from the pounding rhythm of need emitting from her core she spread her legs to allow him more room to play.
“That’s it, baby, open up for me.”  Her legs trembled. The rough material pressed into her cleft. She rocked her hips against him. Needy mewls slipped from her mouth.
“It feels so good,” she moaned.
“Are you going to come for me, Vannah?”
“Y-yes.”
“Mmm. I can feel the heat from your pussy through your shorts. Are you going to let me taste you after I make you come?”
The erotic image of his head between her legs sent her hurtling up the precipice she’d climbed to at the speed of light.
The sound of a zipper being pulled down brought her back to the present. He parted the miniscule piece of fabric and worked it down her hip, stopping to kiss the new patch of skin revealed to his hungry gaze.

Excerpt

Her feet pounded on the pavement as she raced down the dirty backstreets of Deadwood; the night had turned cool turning each heavy breath into a misty vapor.
They’re so fast, she thought, why didn’t I stay in tonight?  Just for some stupid party! Now I’m being chased by these... these.... things. What are they?
Lexia turned the corner, stumbling on the uneven curb, and gasped as she came to a dead end.
She whirled around to see the three creatures circling her. Fear closed her throat; she tried to scream but nothing would come out. Her eyes widened in fright as they flashed their razor sharp teeth at her.  Vampires?
They had blood-red eyes and pale ghostly skin stretched tight over hard angular bones; they looked like the living dead!  And they were going to kill her.
Lexia backed into the wall, her hands grazing along the rough surface, wishing she could somehow melt into it. She felt so frightened and her body shook in terror as tears silently streamed down her face.  I’m sorry, Dad, she thought as they all leapt at once; a whimper left her lips as she curled into a ball, their razor sharp nails slashing at her skin, gouging into her flesh. She cried out in pain, fear crushing her mind, blackness taking over, when...
Lexia felt her mind go blank and the pain... it was torture as adrenaline rushed through her veins, charging her muscles with strength, taking over her body.  With a cry she stood up throwing the vampires off her; it all happened so quickly, she tore them limb from limb like a crazed animal until there was nothing left but her quivering body soaked in blood.  A metallic bitter smell filled her nostrils; she could hear her heavy breaths, and looking around all she saw was red, death, and darkness.
Lexia stood for what felt like hours looking upon the scene before her; the torn bodies slowly rotted in front of her eyes, then panic bubbled to the surface as she finally got her voice back and she screamed, screamed so hard her throat burned. Tears ran down her blood-stained face as she realized what she’d done - she’d created this darkness, she’d caused their deaths.
People running to her cries could be heard in the distance; snapping back to reality, Lexia looked around one last time, how do I explain this? I can’t.  She ran into the night not paying attention to the direction she took or the fact that she could now run faster than she ever had before. Lexia just thought of putting one foot in front of the other, of the vibrations travelling up each foot as it pounded on the pavement.
*******
Lexia woke early the next morning on the forest floor; her body felt stiff with the dried blood that coated her skin.  As her brain slowly remembered the previous night she shot up on her feet, spinning around, bracing to attack.
But she was alone, surrounded only by tall pine trees, their needles littered the floor and stuck to her clothes. Lexia glanced around herself one last time and then shot off through the trees to her home. ‘Dad’s going to freak if I don’t get home in time!’ As that thought drifted through her head, Lexia somehow found the energy to run faster.  Five minutes later she stood at the edge of the trees that lined her garden. There were no signs of life in the old wooden house, so she ran to the trellis below her window climbing with an ease she’d never had before. She got back in her room and under the duvet as her dad poked his head around the door.
“Time to get up Lex, sweetie.”
Lexia’s dad, Mike, had raised her on his own since her mother, Lucy, had walked out when Lexia was 5 months old.  Lexia had only one picture of her mother, it was taken when she had just been born; Lucy was looking down at her baby, her pale blond hair covering her face. Lexia didn’t know what she looked like but sometimes she would dream of a woman with blond hair singing to her.
Lexia had asked her dad if her mother had sung to her as a child but he would never answer her questions about her mother; he always closed up and snapped at her as if the mere thought of Lucy caused him pain. Lexia had tried to come to terms with the fact that she would never know her mother and the reason she’d been left behind; but sometimes, no matter how hard Lexia tried, she would long to meet her mother.
As her dad walked down the stairs, Lexia got up and looked at herself in the full-length mirror that hung on the back of the door.
Her long boots were torn and the leather stained darker on the toes and ankles; her hands trailed over her shredded jeans.  The back of her blouse was also in ribbons. She took it off looking at her torn skin and where it had already started to heal, some gashes were just faint, red lines.  Stripping off the rest of her clothes, Lexia stood looking at herself in her underwear. Even with all the muck and blood that stained her skin, she couldn’t miss the subtle changes to her body.  Her stomach was just that tiny bit tighter, the slightest hints of a six pack showing. In fact her whole body just seemed more refined; as she moved forward muscles shifted under her skin.  Lexia looked closely at a slash across her cheek and gasped as it started to heal. She watched in horror as the flesh knitted back together, felt the tingling, stabbing sensation, and then prodded her finger against the red scar line as it disappeared.
“What has happened to me?” she whispered against her fingers.
She wanted to hide, to run, to cry, but then she noticed her eyes and how they had changed. No longer were they just a clear, crystal blue but blue with a fine rim of gold lining the pupil. She couldn’t hide from this; there was something wrong with her, the evidence staring back at her every time she looked in a mirror.
Lexia started to back away from the mirror. She couldn’t seem to tear her eyes away from the person staring back at her. She could feel herself trembling and hear the galloping rhythm of her heart. So many emotions bombarded her as she decided whether to call for help or hide away from the world. She stumbled forward as the back of her legs hit the foot of her bed.  “What am I?” she squeaked.
“Lexia, everything alright?” her Dad called up the stairs.
She didn’t answer at first. Am I okay?
“Lex?”
“Yeah.... fine, Dad. Just tripped,” she called. Her eyes hardening, she could never tell a soul.

Lexia dashed across the hall and locked herself in the bathroom. She stepped into the bath, turning on the shower and watched as the water turned red at her feet from the near-scalding cascade skimming over her body.  She stared at the pale blue walls of the bathroom, the night before playing over and over in her head and she wondered whether she had gone mad, whether everything that had happened had just been a dream. Then she glanced down to the pink water pooled at her feet and realized she wasn’t mad.  The blood washing off her body wasn’t make-believe and the cuts and scrapes that covered her skin had been made from the sharp nails of vampires, but the scariest thing of all - magically watching her skin heal. What am I?  she thought again.

When Gabriella finally comes face to face with the cousin she never knew existed, her true destiny is unveiled, and the fate of the mortal world is in her hands.

Excerpt

Darron was on the roof of a large building, elevated dizzyingly high over the road below. Other skyscrapers bordered it, but it was by far the largest building in the general area, standing several stories higher than it's neighbors. The few cars that dotted the street below looked like insects. Above him, the moon shone full, round, and red in the night sky. It was an autumn moon, a blood moon. By the light of that moon, Darron was able to see the practiced movements of six black-cloaked figures, who swayed to the steady beat of an invisible drum. Their shapes were obscure in the pale light, and it was impossible to determine if they were men or women because the dark, hooded robes they wore hid their features from view.

There was an altar erected in the center of a circle that was outlined in black charcoal. On that altar sat the normal tools of ritual: a black tipped dagger, a silver chalice, an incense burner, and multiple black candles. Darron owned similar items. They weren't frightening in themselves. But the altar, like the people who lingered around it, was outlined by a shimmering black aura. The vibrations they relayed were no less than evil. Their presence made Darron shudder. He watched in horror, as a silent and unwelcome spectator to the forbidden rights.

Four of the cloaked figures took up the elemental corners, preparing to call the Guardians. The Guardians answered their call, unable to ignore the summons because magick can't be divided into good and evil. It's both because nature is both, harsh and devastating yet beautiful and gentle as the need arises. It was just as easy for the dark witches to harness the destructive forces of nature as it was for Darron and his coven to call upon its life giving magick. Good or evil was in the heart of its master, not in the magick that was wielded.

A fifth cloaked figure, the apparent leader of the group, stood in the center of the circle with the dagger raised high above his head. The sixth and final coven member groveled at the feet of the leader, his head lowered in acquiescence. The hood of his cloak hid his face though he was no more than a few feet away from Darron.

"Brother and sisters," the leader proclaimed, his accented voice heavy with his foreboding presence. "Tonight in the wake of the blood moon, we come together to bring a new brother into our fold. He has completed the required tasks and proven himself worthy to join us in our work."

"So mote it be!"

The four other cloaked figures cried out in perfect unison. Their hands were raised to the sky in honor of the blood moon.

The leader picked up the chalice from the altar. He followed the path of the circle to all of the elemental corners, stopping at each of the robed coven members in turn. Each offered their willing hands to their leader, palm outward. Each welcomed the point of the black edged dagger as it dug into their open palms without so much as a gasp of pain. The high priest cut a clean line down the centers of the palms of his disciples, and they all squeezed their fingers against the open wound to allow the blood to drip into the waiting chalice.

After collecting the offering from his followers, the leader returned to the center of the circle and the waiting initiate. With one quick motion, he sliced open his own palm. He held his hand over the cup, letting his blood drip slowly into the chalice, until the wound miraculously healed before Darron's startled eyes. When the chalice was full, he carried it to the eager initiate who took the cup firmly into his hands and tilted it towards his lips.

"As this blood makes you one with our flesh, so your soul follows to become one with the darkness," the English voice intoned.

As the initiate drained the last of the liquid in the chalice, his hood fell away, revealing a blonde ponytail pulled back over a pale white face, made even paler by the outline of bright red blood around his lips. Darron watched in stunned, horrified silence as his own face turned to meet his gaze. Eyes turned as black as coals stared back at Darron with a grim smile of satisfaction.

"Rise Darron," the leader commanded. And as he spoke, he lifted the hood from his head. Rise brother of the Dark Coven."

Worse, she soon learns that the ones she trusted most have become part of her nightmares. The only one she can trust is the man who holds her heart, and together they must fight Nicholas to the death.

Teaser from Wolf Dream:
“Esmerelda, I need your help!” Julie yelled from the front of the plane.
That worried me even more than dying. She never needed—let alone wanted—my help. I ran as fast as I could, jumping over the dead bodies to get to the cockpit.
She looked at me with wide eyes. “He won’t wake up. I don’t know what’s wrong.”
Jarak was there first, grabbing Julie and pulling her out of the way. “Move, Es, I can’t let this happen, not right now. It’s not right.”
I didn’t understand what he meant but moved anyway. Ian was right behind me. “Camilla and Lauren went to take care of the other three breeds and Ailaina went to find a first aid kit to help Lauren.”
I nodded but it all felt so surreal. Was this really happening?
“Damn it, Julie, why’d you have to put them to sleep?” Ian asked.
“Don’t yell at me. I did what I had to do.”
Jarak tried every combination to open the cockpit door but nothing worked. Ian pushed past me to Jarak. “Move over, I got this.” He slammed into the door with his shoulder, creating a small but otherwise useless dent. Turbulence jerked the plane as Ian hit it again.
“Hey, man, I don’t see what you’re trying to do. This door is made to withhold attacks,” Jarak said as he returned to the door.
“Well, wise one, the plane is going down because smarty pants over there put the pilot to sleep and can’t wake the pilot. We,” he used his finger to point at all of us in a circle, “are the only ones awake. So, we need to get in there.”
Hearing Ian confirm my fear of why the plane was descending so fast scared me even more. “Let him try, Jarak.”
“Fine, but what are you gonna do once you get in there? None of us know how to fly a plane.”
“I’ll figure that out, right now we just need to open this door.” Ian plowed into the door again.
“That won’t work,” Camilla said as she neared the cockpit.
Jarak raised his hands in surrender. “I’ve already tried to tell him.”
“Here, let me.” She walked up to the door with a set of keys.
Ian moved back over by me, rubbing his shoulder. “Well, now you show up.”

Niall MacLaren is determined to turn his ranch into the biggest cattle dynasty in the Arizona Territory. The widower will do whatever is he must to obtain the political and financial support required; even marrying a woman he does not love. Nothing will stand in his way.

Katherine is well-bred, educated and seeking life away from her cloistered existence in the East. Landing the teaching job in California provides her with the opportunity she seeks. Most importantly, and unlike most of her peers, she will not need a husband to achieve her goals.

When an accident brings them together, mutual desire takes root, threatening to dismantle their carefully laid plans and destroy their dreams. Can either of them afford to be distracted by the passion that unites them---especially when one of them may belong to another?

Shirleen Davies
Author Bio

I have been writing most of my life, but only recently began the transition into fiction. Historical romance, contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and short stories are what keep me reading, so that is the focus of my writing.

I was born in California, grew up between a growing beach town and a small town at the base of the San Bernardino mountains. My mother originally planned to name me Katherine, but she read an article in the paper about a woman named Shirleen shortly before my birth, so instead of having a cool nickname, like Kate, I am simply Shirleen. My mainstays growing up were all the Nancy Drew mystery books; I loved them. Eventually I moved on to mysteries, suspense stories, crime novels, and romance. Pride and Prejudice will always be one of my favorites.

Besides California, life changes have allowed me to live in Oregon, Colorado, and Arizona. Everywhere I have lived has been inspirational in one way or another, giving me the opportunity to meet remarkable people with their own stories to tell. I've sailed, skied, owned horses plus lots of other animals, and ridden various off-road vehicles. I enjoy dancing, fishing, hunting, being the back-seater on my husband's Harley, traveling and, of course, reading and writing.

Prior to transitioning to writing fiction, I worked for Fortune 500 and many smaller, start-up companies. Fortunately, I regained my sanity long enough to start my own consulting firm, which I still maintain today.

My husband and I spend most of our time at our main home in the mountains of Arizona and our second home in Southern California. Between us we have five boys with growing careers and families of their own.

So, from my perspective, my life is a success and always an adventure. I wouldn't change a thing; well, except finding more time to write.

INTERVIEW:
  1. If you were a superhero what would your name be? You know those Meme’s that go around Facebook; ‘the color of your shirt and the thing to you left is your super hero name’? Well, one time I came up with ‘The Blue St. Bernard’ and I thought it was so silly I kinda want to keep it. I don’t know what my super hero powers would be because all my Bernard does is sleep and lick my face… but it’s still a cool name.
  2. One food you would never eat? Shellfish, I have an excuse because my husband is deathly allergic, but really it just boils down to being mucus pre-cooking. I have a strict anti-mucus policy.
  3. Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published. Fan mail. Really. I really love to hear from people who have read the book, how much they enjoyed it etc. etc. I get all mushed over every time.
  4. Can you see yourself in any of your characters? Joclyn and I both adore hoodies. I actually mourn summer simply because it means I can’t wear a comfy hoodie for five months.
  5. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year? Iron Man 3 – I’ve got a thing for Iron Man.
  6. Nickname? I get called everything from Bec, to Becky, to Beckster.  It’s only been since I have accepted myself as an adult that people began calling me Rebecca.
  7. If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be? The Basement
  8. What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit? I’m not sure I am truly embarrassed, but I love The IT Crowd
  9. What is your favorite way to spend a rainy day? Inside, reading, with windows open. I love the smell of rain almost as much as I love the smell of books.
  10. How long do you generally let a story idea ‘marinate’ in your brain before you start the book? It depends I focus more on fleshing out characters. Once the characters are very concrete and I’ve got a decent story arch plot tends to come naturally.
  11. What do you think of book trailers? I made one for Kiss of Fire, and not only was it a very big pain to make, it looked awful. I know, personally, I don’t really watch them, so I haven’t made one for Eyes of Ember. We will have to see what the outcome of that choice is.
  12. Something your readers would never guess about you. I am really shy and actually hate talking about my books. I think it’s embarrassing. My future Sister-In-Law read it on the sly and asked me about it, told me she liked it and my response was… ummm okay. Fail.
  13. What words or expression do you overuse? Chuckle, My Heart, Quietly – I am getting better at flushing them out though. I really do want to become a better writer, and I think expanding your word usage is step one to accomplishing that.
  14. What is your favorite scene in the book? When Ilyan takes Joclyn dancing in Santa Fe. You really start to get to know Ilyan, and see Jos come out of her shell.
  15. Do your characters really talk to you? Not in a crazy way, but I definitely get nudges about what is supposed to happen. Like Joclyn’s father, there were aspects of him that even hit me right out of left field. I like it when that happens though, every time they make perfect sense and actually enhance the story. I think it’s because my characters are so stable, I know what they would do and how they will react. It makes everything more believable.
  16. Are you for or against books being made into movies? It seems to be the ‘it’ thing to do lately doesn’t it? I think its fine as long as the author retains creative license. I have seen some book to movie transitions that have been awful! They really need to stay true to the original work. As long as they do that I am for it!
