Dark revelations and secret love lead to personal resurrection.

Carolyn Madison didn't kill her husband but didn't mourn him either. The rapist deserved to die, or at least she thought so. Beneath a myriad of family secrets, Carolyn drags the skeletons out of the closet and in the arms of her true love, learns to love again.

Walt Tollhouse has pined for Carolyn since she was a shy seventeen-year-old. Little did he know Robert Dubois would steal her away, and then destroy the beautiful spirit he still loved? Beneath the guise of clean-up man, the martial arts instructor never pushes his battered love but gives her silent support she deserves.

Excerpt:

Robert rolled his window down, fanning himself as he waited for the cars in front of him to exit. He’d run the company since the death of Carolyn’s father and hadn’t expected to see her at the party tonight.

She’d never taken an interest in the casinos while she raised the kids, but then she hadn’t needed to. He’d paid child support and maintenance to impress old man Madison, so she hadn’t needed to work, but she’d gotten an accounting degree. Hell, she could’ve been working at the firm. He wouldn’t have known it; he didn’t spend any more time there than he had to. She wouldn’t risk coming face to face with him unless she’d found out about his dealings.

Damn, she had to be onto him; otherwise she’d never chase him. He was in deep trouble, and he didn’t want to get into it with the ex-soldier before he left town.

Even though the old man had always treated him like a son, for the last few months he’d ignored Robert. He’d been left out of the loop and treated like a piece of shit by Madison before he died.

Suddenly, a figure rose outside his door. Before he could act, someone grabbed him by the collar and jerked his head through the window.

“You bastard. Come out here, you asshole,” Walt roared. “Time to learn some manners, Dubois.”

Stunned, Robert instinctively hit Walt in the jaw and yanked himself back inside the car. Damn. He had to get away from this madman. Robert tried to roll up the window while trying to push Walt out. “What are you talking about?” Damn these cars. Why don’t they move?

“You know what I mean.” Walt grabbed the handle, trying to open the door. “Get out here. Time you fight someone your own size.”

The car in front of them took off. Without even looking for traffic, Robert tromped on the accelerator, exiting the lot. The son of a bitch still hung on, running beside him.

“It’s not over, Dubois,” Walt hollered and let go.

Robert watched him in his rearview mirror. Walt hated him, and he suspected the man loved Carolyn from the way he hovered around her.

He’d only wanted to party one more night in his Kansas City casino. Barely seeing the road, he glanced at the railroad tracks and the trees lining the Missouri river as he sped along Highway 210 and groaned. He needed to get the hell out of town if he wanted to stay alive, but he couldn’t just quit gambling cold turkey.

Twenty minutes later, Robert glanced over his shoulder before he entered his favorite casino. Good! No one he knew was around him. He took a handkerchief from his suit pocket and wiped it across his forehead. The stories about Walt’s skills and the way he took care of Madison’s enemies made him nervous. Although Tollhouse stayed in the background, Robert knew he was capable of anything.

Robert headed to the high stakes table to get his usual line of credit. He strode across the room and smacked into a man in a loud red shirt surrounded by a large, riotous group of people, but with only a scowl, he went on.

He threw ten one hundred dollar bills on the blackjack table. “Give me five blacks and the rest in green.” Tonight he had the cash to back it up; he had paid the loan shark. Absolutely, never again would he get indebted to him.

A waitress walked nearby, and he waved at her. “Scotch straight.” He placed a couple of black chips worth a hundred dollars a piece on his spot and watched the dealer throw the cards out one by one to the players.

Blackjack.

This time, he would leave the five blacks out. Someone sat beside him, and he glanced at the other player. Robert knew the man in the loud red shirt and greasy hair was a loser. He could spot them a mile away--he’d been snakebit. Quickly, Robert grabbed his chips before the cards were dealt.

“Here’s your drink, sir.”

“Thanks.” Robert handed her a green chip. He gulped the Scotch in one swallow and handed the glass back to the busty redhead. “I’ll take another, but I’ll be over there.” He pointed to the roulette table.

Moments later, Robert stood at the roulette wheel and called out, “Red,” as he placed a hundred on the table. The ball pinged around the wheel before it landed, then cheers went up. He’d won.

“Red again.” He let it all ride.

Cheers again.

People gathered.

“Here’s your drink, sir.” The waitress handed him a glass. Robert clasped the drink and dropped a green chip on her tray.

“One more time.” A hand clapped him on the back. Robert winced at the touch and the swarthy man in the red shirt leaned forward to place his tokens on red. “I’m going to clean up with you.”

The jinx had followed him, but he’d leave before the man’s luck rubbed off on him. Robert shrugged him off and picked up his tokens. He handed them to the croupier. “Give me black.”

“Damn you,” the red-shirted man yelled when he lost his money.

Robert had known the guy was a jinx, but with a glance at the fellow, a pang of fear coursed his body. Was the man following him? Could he work for the loan sharks? Hell, he could even be following him for his partner, Bill Rutherford. A couple of days ago, Bill had questioned him about the stocks. When Robert told him everything was going as scheduled, his partner had sounded as if he didn’t believe Robert.

The Daughters of Zeus by Kaitlin Bevis

Character History/Bio

Persephone begins the series as a shy sixteen year old living in Athens, Georgia. She's not well liked by the girls of her school, but luckily her best friend Melissa does all the fighting for her. When not in school, she works at Demeter's Garden (her mom's flower shop), has a crush on the hot new senior, Joel, and a passion for the "Dusk" series. Her plan in life was to go to UGA, marry the rock star Orpheus, have twin girls named Harmony and Melody, and move into the house with the white picket fence on South Lumpkin  street.

All of that falls apart when her mother announces that Persephone is actually a goddess. Persephone is sure her mother has lost her mind. It isn't until Boreas, the god of winter, tries to abduct her that she realizes her mother was telling the truth. The only place Persephone will be safe from Boreas is in the Underworld. But the only way to get there without dying is to become Hades' wife. After Hades assures her their marriage won'mean anything beyond granting her the ability to come and go from the living realm, Persephone agrees to wait out the winter in the Underworld. While there she learns how to control her powers and explores her growing feelings for Hades. But when Boreas takes her best friend hostage, Persephone knows the time to hide has come to an end.
Hades has been around for a long time. He's a major deity that rules a third of creation. His third is the Underworld, but that doesn't make him a bad guy. He cares very deeply about the residents of his realm and goes out of his way to make them comfortable. His advisors (mostly Cassandra)  routinely tease him about his collection of self-help and "psycho-babble" books. He's kind and fair to the gods in his realm, but  of course, he does have a dark side Needless to say, he's nothing like Persephone expected based on the myths.

Speaking of Persephone, he didn't kidnap her, he saved her from Boreas, and made it very clear she was free to come and go from the Underworld as she pleased, though leaving during the winter would probably be a bad idea. The longer the two get to know each other, the more Hades grows to care about Persephone, but those feelings leave him very conflicted. She's much younger than he is, and since he's saved her life a few times he worries that any move on his part would be taking advantage.

Excerpt

The branch crashed in front of me, scraping my legs. I ran for the parking lot as fast as I could. The frost closed in, surrounding me. I’d never been claustrophobic, but as the frost cut off my escape path with a solid white wall, I panicked.
Fog rolled in, like cold death, cutting off my view of the park. It curled around me, brushing against my face, arms, and legs. I turned back to the tree and ran faster, my dress tangling between my legs as the fog and icy wind blew against my skin.
The parking lot is the other way! my mind screamed. The other way was cut off by a mountain of ice. I felt as if I was being herded. By ice?
I slipped on the icy ground, falling face first into the frost. Ice crept up my toes and along my legs. I thrashed and screamed. I felt the fog becoming a solid mass above me, pinning me to the ground. The ice piled around me. Am I going to be buried alive?
I dug my nails into the frigid snow in front of me and tried to claw my way out of the frosted death trap. I was so panicked I didn’t feel it when my nails broke against the impenetrable wall of ice, leaving red crescents of blood welling up on sensitive skin. An hysterical sob worked its way out of my throat as I gouged red lines into the ice. The ice was above my knees, snaking its way up my thighs. I shivered.
Shivering’s good, I reminded myself. It means your body hasn’t given up…yet. The cold was painful, like a thousand little knives pricking my skin. A violent tremor went up my spine, sending waves of pain through me.
“Help me!” I screamed, knowing it was futile. I was going to die here.
Except I couldn’t die. Could I? Mom said I was immortal, but was that all-inclusive? Did I have a weakness? Was snow my Kryptonite? If I got hurt, would I heal or would I be trapped in an injured body in pain forever?
I suddenly didn’t know if immortality was a good thing or a bad thing. The cold hurt. I was kicking, screaming, and clawing my way out of the frost, but for every inch I gained a mountain piled around me. I thought I heard a man’s laughter on the wind, the sound somehow colder than the ice freezing me into place.
The ground before my outstretched hand trembled. The shaking increased. The earth lurched beneath me. The surface cracked and the sound was so loud that for a moment all I could hear was high-pitched ringing in my ears. The ground split into an impossibly deep crevice. My voice went hoarse from screaming as I peered into the endless abyss, trapped and unable to move away from the vertigo-inducing edge.

Excerpt

I'd been here before. My bare feet glided over the leaf-strewn path, unharmed by the rocks and twigs crunching beneath me. Massive live oaks draped with Spanish moss created a canopy above me, transforming the forest path into a tunnel of speckled sunlight. The air was heavy with humidity. The moist heat pressed against my skin and stole the breath from my lungs. By the time I reached the path’s end, my Eeyore nightshirt clung to my skin.

"Dungeoness." I came to a halt when I recognized the sprawling ruins of the ancient ivy-covered brick and stone manor.
Athens Academy took my class on a week-long trip to Georgia's coastal islands freshmen year. Cumberland Island was a major highlight because of the sea turtles, wild horses, and these ruins.
"Good job, Persephone,” I muttered, kicking at a branch. “You’ve figured out where you are, but how did you get here?" I knelt to pick up a smooth, white stone, tucking damp tendrils of hair behind my ears so I could see better. The rock looked and felt real. I ran my hand over the smooth stone, turning it over and tracing the shape. The weight of it in my hand reassured me.
I turned, hoping the path held some answers, but it was no longer there. I stood on the grass-covered shoreline looking out to sea. In the distance, a girl stood thigh high in the ocean, clad in a gown of strategically placed sea foam. Although her back was to me, I could tell she was perfect. The curly ringlets of hair cascading down her flawless cream skin matched the intense orange of the sky as the sun sank in the sea.
I glanced down at my sun-kissed skin, self-conscious. She was really pretty. A movement caught my attention and I glanced up as she looked over her shoulder, aquamarine eyes meeting mine. Then she spoke. I was shocked to hear Boreas' cold voice roll off her tongue. "Zeus lives."
I stumbled backward. Boreas, the god of winter. My mind flashed back to that horrible day in the clearing last winter. Boreas’ cold laughter. His fingers digging in my hair as he pulled me across the frozen ground. Melissa’s eyes widening as she choked on her last breath. The rush of power that gave me the strength to put Death himself, and Boreas, under my control.
A soul for a soul. I’d bargained with Thanatos, the god of death, and killed Boreas without a second thought, saving my best friend.
Now images shoved their way through my thoughts: Cumberland Island, two sunsets, lightning cracking in the sky. My mind screamed against the onslaught. I gritted my teeth and forced myself to think the word that would make it all stop.
I bolted up in bed with a gasp. A weight in my hand made me look down. I unclenched my fist, revealing the white stone from Dungeoness.

Hades
Watching my wife chase after a human boy was hell. The heavy rain drenched the thin fabric of her clothes in seconds, plastering them to her body in a way that would be appealing…if he wasn’t going to see her, too. I clenched my jaw. She just doesn’t want him to get hurt. It wasn’t as though I wanted any mortals caught in the crossfire when we faced Zeus either. Persephone was just going to charm the boy into leaving the park.
Tearing my gaze away from her as she scurried up the hill, I searched the parking lot for Aphrodite, or Zeus, or whoever he, she, it may be. I had the layout of Memorial Park memorized, anyway. Who was I kidding? The entire city of Athens, Georgia was embedded in my mind. The precaution was reasonable. Persephone spent most of her time here, and she was a magnet for trouble.
I followed her up the dirt-packed path in my mind’s eye. She’d be rounding the corner now well above the park, oblivious to the way the plants she passed leaned toward her. Persephone was beautiful. Vibrant. Light and vitality pulsed from her that like the first warm gust of a spring breeze promised everything would soon be new and alive again, that winter would thaw into life. Everything was drawn to her. Unfortunately.
My thoughts returned to the human boy she was following. I scowled. Rain fell, pinging against the transparent shield that kept me out of sight while I sat dry atop a metal picnic table. My fingers worried a spot of rust. I tried not to think too hard about whatever else might have touched the shining surface.
This realm was disgusting. Insects swarmed the park, and birds flew through the air, dropping waste indiscriminately onto the world below. I couldn’t wait to return to the Underworld. The surface had its charms, but I had no desire to stay for long.
Joel!
Persephone’s voice rang through my mind, and I tossed up a mental wall. It wasn’t just good manners preventing me from listening in. This boy had been in her thoughts every night. I’d seen the way he looked at her like she was something to be consumed, the way he touched her like her body was his for the taking, the way her heart raced when she felt his breath upon her neck. I clenched my jaw and studied the parking lot like it might change shape any moment.
She’d probably think less of me if I ripped him apart.
Not that her opinion was all that stopped me. It wasn’t my habit to go around killing mortal children, and not just because I’d have to deal with them in the Underworld. I liked humans. Just not when they groped my wife.
My heart thudded at an uncomfortable speed, filling my body with adrenaline. I couldn’t seem to catch my breath. My hands gripped the edge of the picnic table, and I leaned forward, muscles tensed. That was strange. I had no reason to be this anxious. He was just a kid, and Persephone was Persephone; she had no idea what effect she had. I couldn’t really fault him for being interested, and I had encouraged her to see other people. A spectacularly stupid move on my part. Not only was it condescending as hell to tell Persephone what she should and shouldn’t feel toward me, but I’d managed to push her into the arms of another man. It had taken all of two seconds for me to realize I really didn’t want her to be with other men.
Apparently on top of all my other charming flaws I’m over-possessive. Who knew?
I took a deep breath to force myself to calm down, but it didn’t seem to work. What was the matter with me? Channeling Persephone’s power away every night had given me a very unwanted front row seat to her developing relationship with Joel. I’d seen every kiss, everything, and not felt this before. It hadn’t been pleasant, but—
Cold dread filled the pit of my stomach, and I frowned. This didn’t even feel like rage. My heart was still beating a mile a minute, like it might burst free from my chest at the slightest provocation. I felt strange, no…terrified.
That was it. Fear. But why was I—? It wasn’t mine.
My thoughts flew to Persephone, crashing through the mental wall. Her abject terror flooded my thoughts with such paralyzing force that for a second I lost the ability to move or breathe. All that existed was her fear. The boy spoke in a harsh voice, grip tight on her arm. I rose from the picnic table, ready to relieve him of that limb, when his words filtered through her thoughts.
…Hades.

I blinked. How would he know my name?

A red sports car squealed into the parking lot, and I swore. Hate to interrupt, I directed the thought to Persephone. The boy locked gazes with Persephone and seemed to look through her to me.
I knew those eyes. Images and thought fragments flashed from Persephone’s mind to catch me up, but I already knew everything I needed to.
Persephone, run! I tore through the parking lot to reach the path.

Hades, it’s Joel! He’s Zeus! The whole story passed through my mind accompanied by waves of fear and guilt. Persephone gripping Joel’s arm to teleport but nothing happening, followed by her realization that Joel wasn’t from this realm. Her shock and horror when his glamour melted away. Why wasn’t she running?
Get out of there, now! I couldn’t keep the panic out of my thoughts. If Zeus hurt her…

Our plan, she protested.

She wouldn’t. Only a fool would risk going through with our plan now. We’d intended to trap Zeus by having him stand on an entrance to the Underworld so we could bring some of my realm up and around him. A little slice of Tartarus. It had worked to imprison some of the Titans before, and it could work with him. But not like this. Not with her alone and hopelessly overpowered.
But this was Persephone. The girl who fled the safety of the Underworld to confront Boreas with nothing but righteous indignation on her side. It was foolish of me to expect her to do anything else.
I swore and scrambled up the hill. Just teleport. Leave!

I can get him to the entrance. Hades, this is our best chance. Her determination pounded through me coupled with her desperate need for this to be over. She wouldn’t run. If I couldn’t reach her in time… A bright light seared my vision as I rounded the corner. She screamed, intense pain flashing through her and reverberating to me. I stumbled, blinded by her white-hot agony. Another flash. Pain flared through her, exploding within my mind in a cacophony of anguish. My vision cleared for a split second, and I saw the ground rush toward me. Then everything went black.
Chapter II
Aphrodite
Persephone’s anguished scream echoed through the park. I’d rushed over as soon as she called me for help, but knew I was too late. The air hummed with energy, setting my hair on end as I jumped out of the cherry red convertible I’d “borrowed” from some random guy.
I sloshed onto the wet pavement, twisting my ankle in my haste, and made a mental note not to wear heels next time Persephone needed me.
Not that she made a habit of calling me when she needed something. She must really be desperate. I hurried up the wooded running path and almost tripped over a crumpled shape. Hades. What could knock Hades out?
“Aphrodite.” A voice as smooth as silk sent shivers up my spine.
I cast a shield and jumped in front of Hades. Zeus emerged from a grove of trees holding Persephone like he was some knight out of a painting. Her limp, dangling arms swayed as he walked. Golden hair, so bright against her corpse- pale skin that it didn’t look real, cascaded in waves toward the ground. He strode toward me, strong and radiant. Like the sun had reached through him just to get a little closer to earth. The scene would have been breathtaking, like something out of a storybook, if it wasn’t for the sinister expression on his face.
Damn it, I’d hoped it would never come to this. She was my sister and my friend, and I’d stabbed her in the back by pretending “Joel” was anyone other than Zeus. Yes, he’d forced me to help him, but that was no excuse. I never wanted Zeus to win. But now he had Persephone and, with her, access to the Underworld and the living realm. We were all doomed.
“You said you wouldn’t hurt her.” I’d meant to sound defiant, angry, but it came out petulant and scared.
“I said I didn’t have to. There’s a difference.”

I closed my eyes. Of course there was. “You’re leaving me here, aren’t you?” Zeus grinned. “I’m sure you’ll make yourself useful.”
I was surprised it still hurt. I’d known from the beginning I was no more
than a pawn to Zeus. He’d created me from the remains of Uranus to give me unprecedented levels of charisma and then abandoned me in the world without the knowledge to control the charm.
Charisma, or charm, is kind of like mind control if you know how to use it. I can smile at pretty much any human and make him do what I want, but uncontrolled it’s dangerous. Like, Trojan War dangerous. Used without direction, it steers humans toward their baser instincts. They become obsessed. Anything could have happened to me, but either way, it served Zeus’ purposes. He had backup plans for his backup plans.
Now he was leaving me with two very pissed off deities who would move heaven and earth to find Persephone. No telling what they’d do to me.
Did Persephone even know how lucky she was? I’d sell my soul for just one of the following she collected anywhere she went. To be someone worthy of worship instead of the obedient abomination Zeus created, stripped of my free will and forced into servitude.
Zeus shifted and grabbed the necklace Persephone wore. “Tell Hades”— he cast a knowing glance at the shield behind me with a smirk—“and Demeter I’ll take their realms in exchange for the girl.” The silver chain snapped, and he tossed the necklace toward me. “Give him that.”
Before I could answer, he vanished.
Plucking the necklace out of a puddle, I shook water off the small green plant that sat anchored in a wire basket and dried the pomegranate charm on my shirt. Oh yeah. Hades was definitely going to kill me when he came to.
I’d run, but it wasn’t like I had a choice. Zeus created me with an extra special tweak. I was loyal to family. Loyal to the point of obedience if they outranked me enough. That was why I was almost glad I was still “useful” to him; I had a feeling the minute he didn’t need me anymore, he’d ask me to swear fealty and give him all my power. Suicide by devotion. And I’d have no choice but to oblige.
If I swore over everything to him, would he release my soul to the Underworld? Would I finally be free? Or would he keep me, my thoughts and memories, and everything about me that was me locked in his head in case he ever found it useful?
I sat beside Hades and pulled my knees to my chest. Hollow. I felt hollow inside, like Zeus had carved out everything that mattered, everything I cared about, and left me empty. Hopeless. The rain dripped down my face, mimicking the tears I didn’t dare cry.
Chapter III
Persephone
Getting struck by lightning hurts. A lot. Most people die long before they fully process the pain of a storm’s worth of voltage passing through their body in the blink of an eye. I don’t have that luxury. Instead, I discovered something that hurt far worse than becoming a sadistic deity’s living electrical conduit. Healing from a lightning strike at godspeed.
When I came to, my body felt like it was pulsing molten lava through my veins with each heartbeat. Gods! An inhuman moan tore from my throat. What happened? It wasn’t until the bed shifted that I realized I wasn’t alone.
Hades. I let myself relax. Relief calmed me enough for unconsciousness to threaten to pull me back under, so I forced myself to take steady breaths. It was too soon to open my eyes. I knew how to stay conscious through horrific pain. Thanatos taught me that.
I breathed in too deeply, and a bolt of pain lanced through me. When I shifted positions to get comfortable, a low moan worked its way up my throat. There was no comfortable. The lightning had seared every single nerve ending in my body. Healing from this didn’t feel good at all.
His hand brushed the hair out of my face.

“Hades?” I croaked, struggling to open my eyes.

He shushed me, stroking my arm. I leaned into his touch as the memories rushed back—Hades finding out about Thanatos and killing him, destroying his soul, planning to trap Zeus, waiting at the park for Aphrodite, and realizing Joel was there. What happened to Joel?
The voice shushed me again, and the hand on my shoulder didn’t feel comforting anymore. His touch felt…wrong. My eyes flew open, and I bolted upright.
With a horrible certainty I turned to see who sat next to me on the bed.

Faintly, I could hear the glimmer of voices surrounding me in this dark haze, caressing my ears like skin against silk. I felt like I was in a cocoon of sorts, protectively enveloped, quietly drifting in some far-off place. I wanted to stay that way forever.

But we all know that what you want never really seems to happen in the real world.

Something’s not right in Mia’s head.

The first thing is that her name isn’t Mia. In fact, she has no clue what her name is—who she is. All that she knows is that she’s not like the ones who found her: Dante with his kind blue eyes, Amy with her child-like demeanor, James with his questioning gaze.

And Briggs.

The one she cannot decipher no matter how hard she tries.

As Mia tries to fit in with these people, a strange occurrence is amidst outside. And as she finally remembers who she is …

Well, let’s just say that things get a little more complicated.

Liberty's Torch by Janet McNulty with Interview

Interview

1)      First, tell us about yourself – where  you live, your family, and those sorts of details.

I live in West Virginia with my cat.  I’m not married and have no children.  I have a small house with a decent yard for me to walk around in.  I never liked living in an apartment.  It always seems too cramped for my taste.

2)      How long have  you been writing?

I’ve been writing for about ten years.  I started in high school, but did not seriously start writing until after college.

3)      Do you have a favorite place to write?

I prefer to write in my office.  In there I can minimize the distractions so that I ma able to concentrate.

4)      Why did you decide to write Liberty’s Torch?

I decided to write Liberty’s Torch because I have always liked the dystopian genre and because this is one possible  future I see happening.  We live in a world where there is no privacy and anyone can easily steal your identity.  So I thought, what if we lived in a world where the government thought it had every right to control every aspect of your life.  With modern technology it wouldn’t be difficult for them to do so.
When I came up with the idea of Dana’s character, I decided to take my concerns about privacy and wrap it all in an Orwellian landscape.  I believe that most people like to be left alone to live their life as they see fit.  Dana encompasses that.  She grew up in a world where her actions were controlled, but all she wants is to be left alone.

5)      Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

Karl is my favourite character in the books.  He is a bit crazy, or an eccentric old man who takes a liking to Dana.  Though he is also handy in a fight and a force to be reckoned with.  He is sort of a crazy inventor type who can kick some serious butt if he needs to.

6)      How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

Colonel Fernau is my least favorite.  He is a sadistic character who will do anything to get what he wants.  HE doesn’t care whom he hurts or what he has to destroy.  He has no moral compass and only cares about his desires.  In fact, he enjoys inflicting pain.

7)      Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

I do most of my own editing.  Especially the first editing because that is how I can see what works in the book and what doesn’t.  It also allows me to make the necessary changes.  If I have the money, I hire someone to proofread and catch the mistakes that I’ve missed.

8)      What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I cook.  I love to bake so when I’m not writing I’m usually cooking something in the kitchen.  Usually cookies or cakes.  However, I also like to be outside.  I have a small garden that I tend.  When the weather is nice I will just sit out in the sun for an hour or two.  I spend enough time indoors.

9)      Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

I read a lot.  Most of what I read is fantasy, mystery/thrillers, science fiction, or dystopian.
I like George Orwell and his 1984 is a favorite of mine.  But I also like J.R.R. Tolkien and his Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.  I am also a fan of Harry Potter.  Yes, I like harry Potter.  Sometimes I wish my school days were as interesting as his.  But I found the stories fun and enjoyable.

In college I read a lot of Mary Higgens Clark’s book.  She has some good mysteries.

10)   Why did you choose a futuristic setting for your book?

I thought it would be easier to work with.  I didn’t want to do a historical piece and I decided that setting it modern day wouldn’t work very well.  With a futuristic setting I can give Liberty’s Torch a “what if” scenario.  What if Dana’s world became a reality?   It also gives a bit of science fiction flair to it because it allows me to think of the kind of technology that might be used in the future.  Though I didn’t go overboard on that because it’s not the focus of the story.

Title: Liberty’s Torch
Author: Janet McNulty
Genre: YA Dystopian

All it takes is one spark to ignite the flame of liberty.
Six months have passed since Dana and Kenny parted.  Forced to live as a wanderer, Dana discovers a crashed drone and learns of the chaos within Dystopia and what President Klens has planned for the resistance. Realizing that she must go back, Dana acquires the help of a seventy-year-old man and an old friend.  Upon her return, she finds that rebellion is in the air as the government continues to eliminate dissenters.
Forced to disguise herself, Dana searches for the resistance to tell them of President Klens’ plans.  After a few run-ins with the officers and narrow escapes from Colonel Fernau—his obsession with her growing each day—she learns that the people of Dystopia yearn to be free from their oppression.  What they need is a leader.  Knowing that everyone she cares for will never be safe so long as the government reigns supreme, Dana must decide how far she is willing to go achieve freedom.

Excerpt

Dana burst through the brush.  The other man reached for his weapon.
“Drop it,” said Dana pointing her gun at him.
“That gun is empty,” said the man.  “You used both barrels.”
Dana cocked the weapon pointing it at his head.  “You sure about that?”
The stern look on her face unnerved the man.  He dropped his knife and bag.
“Kick it over here,” said Dana.
The man kicked the bag to her.
“Now the both of you get going.”
“Fine.  You can have the runt.”
The second man helped his friend up and carried him away.  They scurried through the brush and away from Dana’s cold exterior.
Once she made sure they had gone, Dana searched the bag for anything of value.  She put any valuables she found into her own.  Kenny coughed.  Dana tossed him a water bottle.  “Drink that.”
“Dana?”
For the first time, Dana looked at Kenny finally realizing who he was.  She threw the bag aside.  “Kenny?”
“Bet you never thought you’d see me again.”
“I had hoped I wouldn’t.”  Her controlled voice hurt Kenny.

Chasing Flames by Emily Fogle with Interview

Interview

1)      First, tell us about yourself – where  you live, your family, and those sorts of details.

I live in Southern California and have all of my life. My wonderful husband and I have two beautiful sons that keep us super busy and on our toes. All of my time is spent on my family. And when I'm not keeping them entertained, I find a few minutes here and there to write!

2)      How long have  you been writing?

I've always loved writing. However, it wasn't until I took a creative writing class in college with a wonderful professor that I truly unlocked some of my ability. My professor is actually the one that drove me to start writing novels.

3)      Do you have a favorite place to write?

Before I had my baby, I would stay up until 3 or 4 in the morning writing in the quiet of the playroom. Now, however, I sneak in some time downstairs while the baby is sleeping. I think my ideal writing spot would be anywhere I could see it raining, though!! Since rain doesn't happen very often where we live, I'd get very little writing done!

4)      Why did you decide to write Chasing Flames?

Actually, this book was created out of frustration. I had written my middle grade novel, Dragon Wars, and was trying to get an agent for it. I received quite a few responses praising the book, but in the end they want novels geared toward young adults. So, I decided to try my hand at a YA story!

5)      Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

Adam! Adam is so mischievous and a total smart ass. There is a lot of my husband in this character.

6)      How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

My true least favorite character doesn't show up until book two actually. His name is Sigmund. Without spoiling too much of the plot, I will say that he is just a pompous, arrogant jerk! However, in this book, I'd have to say my least favorite is Mr. Morrano. He is one of Aydah's teachers and is inspired by a teacher I had in high school.

7)      Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

I am a very anal editor!! I go over my books many times with a fine toothed comb, but that is never enough. No matter how many times I go over my work, I am bound to miss something. So, that is where Melissa Ringsted comes in! She is the editor for Anchor and has done a great job.

8)      What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Spend time with my family! I am either playing with my son's, volunteering in my older son's classroom, doing something Scout related, camping, or just plain hanging out and enjoying my boys  - and yes, I include my husband in the 'boy' category.

9)      Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

I read when I can and it isn't as often as I'd like! I love Tolkien, George R. R. Martin, Ken Follett, Stephen King's Dark Tower Series, and I've grown to be a fan of Alicia Michael's and Stacey Rourke's work!

Blurb-
Aydah Bell was happy in her normalcy; she was never the class clown or the sports hero, never the beauty queen or little Ms. Honor Student. One day, after a pointless family mini-vacation, Aydah returns to school and finds that her sheltered little world has turned upside-down. Besides the fact that she is beginning to crave raw meat, people are also disappearing.

Suddenly, an alarming disappearance in the quiet and serene city she calls home puts the whole town into high-alert. One of Aydah’s schoolmates vanishes during the weekend and is conveniently replaced by a newcomer. To Aydah’s surprise, the new boy is the completely beautiful and oh-so mysterious Liam Bailey.
Aydah finds herself drawn to Liam. He consumes her thoughts and she aches to be with him. In the mix of passion, jealousy, and hatred that follows, Aydah is too distracted to see the horrible fate headed straight for her.

Excerpts-
There was so much pain. My skin was on fire and sweat dripped from every pore of my body. There was nothing I could do to make it go away, nothing in the world that could stop it. My flesh was being ripped from my bones, and my insides were being torn out. I was dying … what else could it be? Nothing besides death would feel so terrible. My head pounded and my brain ached. Hot pokers seared into my eyes, and my ears throbbed with sharp, shooting pains.

***

For just a moment more, his fingers continued to touch my forehead. He was perfectly still. His eyes were riveted to my face, like he was memorizing every line, every curve, with his fingertips and copying the image of my features into the palm of his hand. When he lowered his hand slowly, the tips of his fingers traced the bridge of my nose and followed down my jaw line. Frozen feathers, velvety and invigorating, awakening my body with their soft tickling chill. He cupped my chin in his hand and I could feel how powerful he was. He could bring down a mountain, reducing it to dust, but he was also gentle. There was safety in his stone caress and tenderness. The tips of his fingers rested beneath my chin and lifted my head slightly. As he brought his face to mine, my heart caught in my chest and my breath stopped completely. My head was a tornado of want and need. The temperature of my skin began to boil, but Liam’s skin sent a shiver down my spine. I was burning with fever, but shivering against the cold.

Computer Update

I finally have my computer back and fixed.  I want to thank everyone for your patience while my computer was being fixed.  I will try to make up what I can, any reviews I have missed will have to be made up as I can at later dates since everything was on my computer.  Thankfully I didn't lose anything.  But it did take them longer to fix it because they had to order special parts.  It feels good to have my computer back.  Again I would like to thank everyone for your understanding and patience.
