Dearhart Clan Series by Eri Nelson with Interview

Interview

1) First, tell us about yourself – where  you live, your family, and those sorts of details.

An Ohioian I was born Erica Walcott and the youngest of three in a family of five. I became Eri (airy) from my mother who called me that for as long as I could remember. The short take on my name took on a more solid base with the love of my life and husband, Jeff Nelson.Together we have been for over twenty years.

2) How long have  you been writing?

I guess I am no different from any other author if I said all my life.

3) Do you have a favorite place to write?

Any place quiet (she smirks).

4) Why did you decide to write Dearhart Clan Series?

It came on a call out from a publisher after I wrote my very first book that was around 40,000 words. Although they were asking for a story of only 15,000 words and eventually rejected it, something still sparked within in me to continue on with this short fast paced action packed books that gained in length with each new book.

5) Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

Through the series, it would be Wash. For he is more than  what, at first, appears to be a villain.

6) How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

I honestly don’t think I have a least favorite. (She looks thoughtfully as if trying to thinking hard on the subject.)

7) Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

I do all of that myself. It is one reason I write the letter from the author in my books and bios. It is sort of like my disclaimer to my readers. This way they can push away from buying if that does not appeal to them

8) What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

It would seem I am always writing so I am not sure what I would do… (she giggles)

9) Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

I love to read and since I have made connections with other authors that reading seems endless. Therefore so would be my list to favorite authors.

10) What question do you wish that someone would ask about your book, but nobody has? Write it out here, then answer it.

So far I have been lucky enough to be asked numerous questions, even the one above.

Thank you so much for allowing me this time with you and your readers.

Best Wishes,
Eri Nelson

Book Description:

Dearhart Clan is a series of fast paced books that dabble in the world of paranormal and remain in the erotic pulse of what can only be classified as a primal fantasy.  If it’s a typical romance you’re looking for you won’t find it in this series.

Eri Nelson writes in a darker world where heat and need are the forefront for a slipping existence.  There is not time for all the tenderness love deserves but if you’re imprinted to another you are far beyond those mortal requirements.

Our author is driven by swift action packed intrigues that often leave you wanting more.  As she writes each new book into the series the number of pages might increase but the action never lets you feel the increasing distance to the final page.

The Call From Within is Eri Nelson’s first look into this series.  It is here that we meet Owen our Pack’s clan leader.  He has been driven by what is expected of an alpha.  Facts that were told through the decades all but look like fiction to him now.  So he never dared to believe in fate and only let duty push him forth.  Although now his resolves make no sense and it took little to no time at all in showing him through the lust he feels for another.

Kristen Still bares the imprinted mark to our handsome alpha.  However he wasn’t the first to notice what she was and it’s that bedding of prior passions that control her new weakness.  Yes, Owen is pushed by jealousy to possess what his four footed insight tells him is his.

A former distraction wanted more than heated moments with Kristen.  In her he saw a stronger life force for his young and if Brinston Drake must he would take what he needs from her.  He just did not foresee another finding her as well.

While the rest of Eri Nelson’s cast of characters find their selves caught up in furthering personal existences. Another by the name of Wash seeks to use their distractions as his gain.  A rogue sent to track and update, Wash is tested by his hatred and desire for revenge.  He’ll have it but not as quickly as he would like.  But soon enough Owen will slip farther into his madness over a bitch in heat.  Then Wash perhaps can use the heated vixen to distract both her and the alpha into their future demise.

Excerpt

~Every hair on Kristen’s arms raised as the eerie cries from their pursuers reached her ears. Seeing Owen tense told her he was gearing up to battle.
Gulping big clumps of fear down her throat, a coarse cry came from Kristen. “Is it Brinston?”
“If that’s the ex”—he spit out the ex part as if the whole knowledge that she could once bed a Shapeshifter revolted him—“then yes.”
Foot to pedal, Owen pushed the gas on the old ford to its max. There was no way the old rusted-out bucket was going to run much farther ahead of the herd of shifters hot on their tail.
Claws on the roof screeched forth like nails on a chalkboard. They were on them, and it was a matter of the time before the truck would be thrown to the side of the road.
A figure close to the look of a rhino came in so fast that it crashed into the driver’s side of the Ford, knocking the panels inward. Kristen screamed in horror with the sight of the blood running down Owen’s left side. Now she was pissed off; how dare they touch him? An instant reflection of possessiveness’s of him was clearing the way for her rage as she looked to the floor of the cab for a weapon. Her fingers felt their way to something metallic. When lifting her prize, she found herself quite proud to be gripping a grease-covered crowbar. However, just as her courage was lifted by the odd shaped metal weapon, the large plate-protected creature once again drove into their vehicle, lifting it up off it’s axles. With one heave of its mighty head, it sent them flying over the edge of the road. Rolling repeatedly, they went, stopping only when they collided with a long-standing grand pine.
Bloodied and crash-ridden, the two found they were looking at each other. Owen, gazing on at Kristen clutching a blackened crowbar, said, “I don’t suppose if I asked you to stay here you would listen?”
“Not like hell,” she replied. If he were going out there, then so was she. Losing him was not an option!

Book Description:

The DHC, Dearhart Clan Series, is a continuing saga that borders on several genres to create what I like to class as dark primal adult paranormal fantasies. In my opinion, the DHC is very erotic but does not fully go into erotica for there are many more aspects I like to let the reader discover from the characters.

Once again, you will encounter Owen Dearhart and his mate Kristen who for a second time find themselves facing obstacles that not only intervene but take away what Owen now finds worth more than the pack itself.

As per request Thomas Dearhart is sent by Owen to track down what they think is a rogue Werewolf. All the while unbeknownst to him, one of their own is taken from the pack. However with knowledge not known a mission at hand takes Thomas finding himself discovering more than what they assumed was a wolf gone astray. It will be this newly discovered venture that will put heat in his loins and a refusal to fully except what is in front of him.

With what seems like destiny fulfilling before him, Wash withers in revenge’s control and takes it upon himself to go further in the mouth of evil for support. So with vengeance as his goal Wash goes back to Opts where Yvone fully intends to arbitrate his ruthless control over not only the situation but Wash as well.

As a cast of characters emerge fighting not only their inner turmoil but those wishing to take them down it should be of no surprise that a few extra faces are now tossed into this dark and desperate world of the unknowns, where the urges of the beast weigh even heavier on their still looming demise.

Excerpt

With the wind came his scent and Julia took pause in her rapid pace. Scanning the ground, she caught the backside of him. Luckily, she was downwind and went unnoticed. With all mountains’ wind, that could change within a pulse. Deciding to hesitate in her movements to look him over could be a mistake. However, by the look of the backside of him, one she would be willing to make.
He was tall, well over her five foot nine stature. Julia could always hold her own in height with the males in town. Still it was nice to see a man who could perhaps make her feel delicate if only for just a moment, if any. At the pinnacle of his stature bore the broadest shoulders she began thinking she had ever seen. Even through his, thick fall apparel she could visibly see the contours of his tapered muscles. They seemed to fight the confines of his clothes and beg to tear free. If she did not resolve what he was from his scent, she undoubtedly could see now what he was by the build of him. She and her brother were the only two she would have ever known of and even that was not until this past year. This man shared the husky form and well-muscled sculpture of her brother. Although this Werewolf would easily outweigh her brother hands down.
She should move and gain ground for her attack but as he turned scanning the land, Julia found herself still to be held in awe of him. Chiseled features trimmed with a shadowing of sandy brown scruff to match his locks of wind-tousled hair. Minus the minuscule of gray that perhaps, only their kind would be able to catch up on. Add in his amber eyes and she could feel an inner turmoil like no other. For all the great works known to the world this man would surely be seen as one of them.
As he caught site of her she knew pausing the second longer on his sun warming eyes had been her down fall. Now it was run and run faster than she had ever in her life.
Tearing through the edge of the lumberyard and entering the forest line took all the strength she could muster. He was fast, too fast, and if not for the distance that had been between them, he would have had her in no time at all.
Their veneer of humanity ran too thin and as the pain creped forward Julia knew that this Were was bringing her wolf to the forefront. With the space amid them disappearing rapidly the urge to change came on chaotically strong. Her stride was pushed to its max and her skin could no longer coil from the oncoming touch. Just as his grip clasp on her the unfurling began and Julia could no longer hold back the pain of the unseen moon’s call.
The hellish howl of a wolf withering in pain filled the tree side. It was enough to stop her once tracker and now pursuer in his tracks. Through her huffing puffs of wolf in changing form, she heard him mutter, “It can’t be?” Then it was all she could do to remain conscious before everything including the arousing male went black.

Excerpt

~She had been eyeing him from across the room most of the night. He had assumed she was either one of Julia’s friends or had been brought by someone. Jake had hesitated for the most part in approaching for he did not wish to flirt with another’s girlfriend. However, he would risk a possible fight over a woman…. for this particular woman.
They had talked for what seemed like hours, both devouring each other in conversation. Before Jake knew it he and Jo, her full name being Joanne but she made sure she had told him that she preferred Jo, decide to free themselves from the confines of the party and take a walk. It did not take long before they reached the wooden enclosure that stood off from the apartments. The eerie surroundings had always unnerved Julia but Jake with his thrill seeking nature enjoyed the hidden hollows that could be found inside. Stopping short of the cluster of tree’s entryway, Jake paused to see if Jo had a little bit of adventure seeking in herself. With a high-spirited nod from Jo they had thrown fear aside and walked within the darken confines. After a bit of feeling for their way, Jake found his favorite spot. The space held a fallen tree in which to sit upon and just enough of an opening from the trees had allowed the mystical orb above to poke through. A spellbinding location that gave allowances for the nightly glow of the moon. From the high perch skylight adorn by the night’s rich forestry foliages covering, grew life on the flow of the luminous rays. Unable to resist the beauty of the moment two heated bodies sought out each other beneath the glistening beams that came from the hours of darkness.
Hungry with lustful intent they shed their garments and glided their bare forms in zealous glee. Fanatical infatuation sparked flames and sent an unleashed inferno of passion down around them. She was sheer bliss and he was driven to devour her.
The suckling of her ivory peaks set Jake forth in claiming his ultimate prize within her womanly core. With his one true goal in mind, Jake thrust his tip forward to enter Jo’s womanly mound. In eager anticipation, she pushed her hips upward in a sensual glide to join with him. They merged while hunger clung to their backs greedily in search of a contented fulfillment.
Higher than the tree’s lengthy top, the moon felt the presence of a fallen child and began to call out for its return.
Ecstasy began to rise from inside of him. The heavy emotion found Jake pushing harder and faster to achieve completion. All the while Jo thrust upward trapped within her own wanted release. The harder he pumped his hips the faster his heart began to beat. In this frantic rhythm, the wilds contained by his unconscious soul began to come alive and demand its freedom. An insisting command that began to curve his spine and send Jake’s body in a convulsing retch of agony. Once the coursing heave started his anguish, Jake screamed into a partial howl that formed from his newly shaped snout. The sound was loud and earth shattering but it need not be for the woman who still lie beneath the now forming wolf. For she alone could hear and react with ultimate fear. Her frantic pulse of coursing blood seethed through her veins and spoke to the no longer in control Jake.
Fully wolf Jake snarled down on to his prey. Its screams put an ache within his ears and a desire to make it stop. His claws curled around her naked flesh as his mighty neck toss back and hurled force into a blood-curling howl. With the warning sung, he flew his jaw downward and snapped onto the soft meaty section under the morsel’s head. In one quick ripping movement there was quiet.

Wolf Born Underground Heat by Ann Gimpel

Wolf Born
Underground Heat
Book 2
By Ann Gimpel

Publisher: Liquid Silver Books
ISBN:  978-1-62210-030-9
Genre: Paranormal Romance
50,000 words

In a futuristic world where shifters keep their friends close and their enemies closer, passion flares hot and sweet.

Book Description:

In a futuristic California that’s almost out of resources, Max leads a double life. A Russian wolf-shifter, he heads up the State of California as its governor—and the shifter underground. He took on the governorship to help his people. Threatened with genocide, many shifters have gone into hiding. Some blame Max and the underground for their plight, rather than the governmental edict that’s meant death for so many.

Audrey works for Max. Unlike most humans with low levels of shifter blood who bless their lucky stars they avoided the purge, she wants to be a shifter. If she could find a way to finesse it, she’d quit her job in a heartbeat and go to work helping the shifter underground. The only sticking point is Max. She’s been half in love with him forever.

Against a dog-eat-dog political backdrop where no one knows who their allies are, Max and Audrey spar with one another. Max fears she’s part of the group trying to kill him. Audrey has no idea about Max’s double identity and worries she won’t be able to walk away from their fiery attraction to help the underground.

After a second attempt on his life, Max faces critical choices. Should he follow his head or his heart?

Excerpt:

…Loren double parked the electric car outside the restaurant and shadowed them inside, along with the redheaded guard. “Looks pretty good.” Loren eyed the private, sound-shielded room. “I’ll be right outside, and John will be here, too, just as soon as he takes care of the car.”
“Once reinforcements arrive, feel free to go hunt for your men,” Max said. “You must be worried about them.”
“Thanks, boss. I am. Go sit down. I’ll scare up a waiter to at least get you a bottle of wine or something. John’s going off-shift in an hour, so there will be two new guards outside when you’re done eating.”
“Thanks for letting me know.” Max pulled the door shut and walked to the table. Audrey had already seated herself and was sorting through the stack of papers, arranging them into piles. “It’s all right if you don’t work for a few moments,” he said, taking a seat across from her.
“It’s better if I have something to, uh, take my mind off what happened. You asked if I’d gotten a chance to practice with the gun. The answer is yes. My brother sort of smuggled me into the cop shop gun range in the middle of the night a couple of times. But I’ve never been around anybody who was dead.” Her voice cracked. He saw her swallow hard. Max’s estimation of her edged up a few notches. Audrey was one tough cookie, even though she might not realize it. Most women would have dissolved into hysterics.
“You did fine. Good thinking to be in front of the elevator door with your gun.”
“Really?” She met his gaze with lovely hazel eyes that were shading toward green at the moment and rested her chin on an upraised hand. “I wasn’t certain what to do. I thought I should call the elevator back, but I didn’t want to subvert whatever you were doing. Then I wondered if I should take the stairs to a lower floor, but that wouldn’t have helped if you were still in the elevator… Ach.” She rolled her eyes. “Don’t mind me. I’m babbling.”
“You did fine,” he repeated just as the door opened, and a waiter swooped in with a silver bucket holding a wine bottle and two glasses.
“Good evening, sir and madam.” The waiter bowed slightly. He was in his fifties with a bald head and merry blue eyes. “The gentleman outside thought you could do with a spot of something relaxing. How does a cabernet strike you? If you’d rather have something different, I haven’t opened it yet.”
“I’m sure it will be fine.” Max held out a hand for the bottle and inspected the label. “What’s on the menu tonight?”
The waiter rattled off a series of dishes while he opened the wine. Max glanced at Audrey. “What sounds good to you?”
She smiled warmly. “I’m used to whatever my ration coupons will buy. If it’s not too expensive, I’d love to have a steak.”
“How would madam like it cooked?” the waiter inquired, arching a brow. He poured a jot of wine into a glass and handed it to Max.
“Rare.”
“Salad and rice or potatoes?”
“Salad and potatoes, please.”
“I’ll have the same,” Max cut in and took a sip of what was a very good wine. Rich and oaky, it had an enticing bouquet. “The wine is perfect,” he told the waiter, who immediately poured some into a glass for Audrey and added more to Max’s.
“This is really quite wonderful,” Audrey said once the waiter left. “Everything. Not just the wine. I can’t remember the last time I ate out at anything but one of those diners where I flash my wrist computer at the glass cases, and it debits credits from my account.”
“Enjoy it.” Max smiled. “You deserve to be pampered after what happened. I can still barely believe…” His voice trailed off. He needed to be careful not to say too much. “Um, what’s in those documents that’s so important?”
She leaned toward him. Her scent was even more intoxicating than the wine. He caught himself inhaling deeply and pulled away, aware of a pressure against his trousers where he was suddenly hard.
Audrey wriggled in her seat. She bit her lower lip and blew out a tense breath. Finally, she lowered her voice and murmured, “I probably shouldn’t do this, but I need to be honest with you. It’s all in my employment records anyway, but since I was here long before you were governor, well, you may not have looked at them… Cripes! I’m blathering like an idiot.”
“Whatever it is, just go ahead and tell me.” Max felt oddly protective toward her, though he didn’t understand quite why. Worse, the moment his cock had gotten hard, his wolf had begun a steady patter of lewd side remarks that made Max want to throttle him.
“There’s no easy way to do this,” she went on, her knuckles so white against the wineglass, Max hoped it wouldn’t shatter from the pressure. “If you decide I can’t work for you afterward, well…” she set down the stemware and spread her hands in front of her. “Not much I can do about it. I have shifter blood. Roughly 35 percent. Some of my relatives have been killed in this purge, so I’m not the most ardent supporter of the governmental edicts to round up shifters and imprison them.”
She sucked in a ragged breath and raised her gaze so she looked right at him. A combination of defiance and pleading etched fine lines around her eyes.
“Miss Westen. Audrey. I’m not going to fire you. It’s all right. Thank you, for trusting me.” Deep inside, Max felt the wolf push him to say more, to tell her about the serum. To offer it up, for God’s sake. He resisted. “You told me that for a reason. I assume it’s related to the documents. Could you walk me through what’s in them?”
She nodded. “Sure. It’s intel about something called the shifter underground.” Her eyes flashed. “Frankly, now that I know about them, I’m on their side, but don’t worry, I wouldn’t ever say that publicly.”
Max listened as she relayed the story he’d lived for the past couple of days. Everything was there, including the serum that pushed cops with a low percentage of shifter blood into full-blown shifters. Before the series of intravenous infusions that law enforcement had forced on their elite tracker task forces, a person needed 50 percent shifter blood to morph into their bond animal. After the infusions, 10 percent was sufficient. Max had gotten unutterably excited by the prospect of thousands of new shifters to swell their ranks and perhaps turn the tide of the war in their favor.
Another set of nationwide reports detailed those same cops betraying their oaths and going rogue. Predictions about anarchy ran wild. By the time Audrey was finished, Max was ecstatic, but he couldn’t let it show. Everything he’d assumed would happen was playing itself out like a well-oiled machine. He couldn’t wait to let the underground know.
“Well?” Audrey raised her gaze from the stack of papers and gathered them together.
“Interesting material. I understand why it was classified top secret.” Max tried for a neutral expression. Just because she’d confided in him was no reason to let his guard down.
The door to their private dining room opened. The waiter pushed a cart laden with wonderful smelling dishes. Max’s mouth watered. He hadn’t eaten since breakfast, and it was pushing nine at night. For the moment, his sexual hunger receded, and he tucked into a succulent, barely cooked piece of meat.
“Where do they get this?” she asked, cutting into her steak and chewing slowly. “None of the shops where I exchange my ration coupons ever have anything but ground or processed meat products.”
“There’s a black market,” he replied around a mouthful of salad.
Her brows drew together. “So it’s real,” she muttered. “I never paid much attention.” Her mouth curved into a smile. She set down her fork and knife. “It’s so good, I feel like I should save what’s left and take it home. I’ve already eaten far more than I usually do.”
“I can ask the waiter to box it up for you.”
“That would be wonderful. Thank you.” She glanced at him shyly through long, dusky lashes. “You’ve taken the worst day of my life and turned it into something special.”
He wanted to move to her side of the table and gather her into his arms. Not only was Audrey one of the most stunning women he’d ever seen, she was level-headed and seemingly oblivious to how gorgeous she was. Max put himself on a tight leash. He had bigger problems to attend to than his non-existent love life. At least so far, Audrey hadn’t asked about O’Hare’s accusations in the elevator. Christ! Maybe she thought he was tossing the shifter epithet at her.
Max nodded to himself. It made sense. Likely, that was why she’d fessed up about her shifter blood.
“Penny for your thoughts, boss?” She focused her alluring hazel gaze on him. In the low light, her eyes held a violet cast.
“Nothing. Are you about ready to head home?”
She nodded. “I suppose we should. Tomorrow morning will come around early.”
He laughed. “Right you are, Miss Westen. It always does. It’s all right with me if you take a few hours off—”
She waved him to silence. “Nothing happening at home. The neighborhood’s gone to hell. I can’t even go out for a walk anymore. All I do is sit barricaded behind a bunch of deadbolts.”
Part of him wanted to bring her home with him, to his uptown mansion where she’d have gated grounds to roam. He cleared his throat before something untoward slipped out. “Let me find the waiter.” He realized he was still hard and pulled his jacket around to shield the evidence as best he could.
As if the waiter had been waiting right outside and could read his mind, the door opened before Max had gotten up. “Would sir and madam like anything else? A touch of dessert perhaps?”
“You can box up the rest of the lady’s meal,” Max said. “You wouldn’t happen to have that delectable chocolate mousse?”
The waiter’s mouth formed an apologetic moue. “Not tonight, sir. We have lemon cheesecake, a cheese and fruit plate with brandy, or ice cream.”
“Does any of that sound good?” Max glanced at Audrey. Her eyes were wide with delight.
“Oooooh, it all sounds wonderful. I can’t even remember the last time I had real ice cream. That frozen crap they sell nowadays doesn’t even have any dairy products in it.”
“Could you bring us a sampler plate with a little of everything?” Max asked.
“Of course. Coming right up.” The waiter snatched their plates and left.
“Not that I wouldn’t love something sweet,” she said a bit wistfully, “but I thought we’d decided it was late and—”
Max kicked himself. They had decided that—sort of. He was enjoying himself, and he didn’t want the evening to end, but that wasn’t the sort of thing he could—or should—say to his secretary. He shrugged. “You seem to finally be relaxing. After what happened at the office, you deserve a little R and R. You really can come in an hour or two later tomorrow.”
Her gaze softened. “Thank you.”

Fire and Shadow by Susan J McLeod with Interview

Interview

1)      First, tell us about yourself – where you live, your family, and those sorts of details.

I live in Upstate New York, which has a rich paranormal history, so the seeds were sown early. I have a brother and three sisters, and my parents were wonderful. They always encouraged us to learn and nurtured our talents. I work for a family foundation composed of incredibly generous philanthropists. They sponsor so many different programs. One of them is Zara’s Center, a school for AIDS-impacted orphans in Zimbabwe. I’m donating all the profits from my upcoming novella Shell and Shadow to them.

2)      How long have you been writing?

Since the first book was put into my hands. I scribbled in all of my books. I was telling stories that no one could understand! But since the writing made sense? I was about seven when The Adventures of Dusty the Fairy was launched.

3)      Do you have a favorite place to write?

I have to be indoors, at my desk. I’m not one of those authors who can sit in Starbuck’s or bask in the sunshine on a beautiful day. Firstly, I don’t have a laptop! Secondly, I can’t concentrate unless I’m in silence. I’m too easily distracted!

4)      Why did you decide to write Fire and Shadow?

I wrote Fire and Shadow because people liked my first novel, Soul and Shadow, so much. I didn’t intend for it to be a series, but I got such nice reviews and fan mail that I wanted to give people more.

5)      Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

I love Stephen, my main character’s ex. Lots of my readers want him out of Lily’s life, but I understand why he’s the way he is and he is such a reliable, good-hearted man. The things he does for her!

6)      How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

I don’t care for Yvette. She’s arrogant and there’s something forbidding about her.

7)      Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

I proofread and edit as I go along. That’s why it takes me approximately a century to get a novel finished. After I’ve read it at least 200 times, it goes off to the team of editors at Imajin Books. If it’s being self-published, I still use a professional editor. The importance of that cannot be overstated. It’s one of the top standards by which people will judge your book.

8)      What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Listen to music, walk in old cemeteries, spend time with friends, read. It’s a complete fabrication that I’m addicted to computer solitaire!

9)      Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

I used to read voraciously until I became a full time author. Now, between working, writing, research and marketing, not to mention social media, I don’t have a lot of free time. I like science and archaeology so I search out those articles online. And I subscribe to history and archaeology magazines. I do always keep up with Phillippa Gregory and anything she’s written.

10)   Do you ever find that people judge you by your books?

Yes. In the same way that it can be hard to separate an actor from a role he plays, some people assume that my characters reflect me. But I don’t have psychic powers, see ghosts, or bond with spirits from the past! I’m fascinated by the paranormal, but I also have a healthy amount of skepticism.

Book Description:

“When the dead need to speak, she must listen…

Artist and Egyptologist Lily Evans struggles with her newly discovered psychic talents, while trying to get her life back to normal now that her mother is in a mental institution and the man Lily loves is far away in England. But "normal" is the last thing she finds.

When her best friend Katy takes her to a Celtic Faire, Lily meets a druid fortune-teller, who warns her that she can “never escape the Other.” Frightened and angry, Lily ignores his dire warning and stumbles across an eerie old portrait of a beautiful woman, who has something to tell her.

With the help of the enigmatic druid and his gifted friends, Lily embarks on a dangerous journey to unravel the mysteries of the portrait, the tarot card reader, an ancient book and whispers of witchcraft. She must discover the truth behind them all…or risk losing her very soul.
Prologue

They were coming for her.
She, who burned in the world like a flame, whose beauty drew all men, whose knowledge was so powerful it had to be buried.
How could such a life end in fire as well?
She should have foreseen the danger, yet she had depended on love and laughed in the face of hatred. She'd had time. She'd had her position and her man and her power. The people could whisper and cross themselves as she passed by, but did they not come to her for potions still? Did they not seek help when their families or their animals ailed? Hypocrites and cowards, all of them. Who would speak for her when the unthinkable happened? Who would protect her in her own home? No one.
She was alone. Her husband was away and could not fight for her. She could see the mob approaching the house. Their malice was a palpable entity. The madness in their eyes told her she was doomed. They broke down the door and burst in, Reverend Lacy leading them, quoting scripture while his parishioners chanted and prayed. The loathsome figure of Amos Woodbine wielded his heavy walking stick, his face twisted in triumph. For a moment, rage overcame her fear.
"Lecherous dog! This is how you treat your own family? I swear, you shall not long outlive this abomination." She pointed an accusing finger at the crowd. "And the rest of you— what courage, what character you possess. You bring a rabble against one small woman? How proud you must be of your virtue."
Her dark eyes flashed and she tossed her long, silky hair. More than one male heart stirred. But there could be no stopping the mob now.
"Silence, witch! You have worked your last evil upon this town." The reverend twitched with excitement. "I consign thee to the depths of Hell."
At this signal, everyone threw their torches to the floor. The wood quickly began to burn, aided by the oil in the lamps. She glanced about wildly, seeking escape, but the cowards were blocking the doors and windows from outside. Smoke began to fill the room. Although it was becoming hard to breathe, she managed a last defiant shout. "Fools! You cannot destroy me. I shall return."
The flames crept closer, hungry for her flesh. She screamed with all her might. Then she crumpled, unconscious, to the floor.

She awoke to darkness. She was but a shadow now, lost in that dead world, yet not wholly alone. Sometimes she could hear his voice— her husband's— and it brought both joy and anguish. The man she had thought to spend eternity with, their love reduced to memories and whispers.
"Rose? Where are you?" His words were filled with longing and pain. "When shall I see you again?" But she had no answer to comfort him.

Her only hope was the portrait— her image on canvas, a gift from her husband. Into the painting had gone his love and passion and a spark of the power between them, a spark of her soul. It had been hidden carefully in the attic of the old mansion. The precious book that was the repository of her knowledge was secure as well. She and Jacob had buried it only days before, after that mad preacher had first visited their house. The book had been almost complete, but they had sensed the animosity of the town growing. It had been best to take every precaution to keep the family safe while they made their final plans.
Alas, she had not believed the townspeople would strike so quickly. Jacob had been hunting in the woods with the wolf, and when he returned, he'd found their home a smoldering ruin. Before he could even grasp what had happened, he was dead. Four shots from a townsman's gun finished the murderous business of the day. But she would not lose him. Somehow she would escape.

Her portrait was discovered twenty-five years later by a new generation occupying the old Woodbine homestead. Struck by its beauty, they hung it on the wall with their other pictures. All were entranced by its magic, but only one had the power to understand it. Lara, a sickly girl of eleven, gazed often into the dark, painted eyes. Rose reached out and touched her mind, trying to tell her tale. For a time, it seemed that Lara would help. Rose tried to give her strength, but the frail child succumbed to illness, and the family moved away.
Rose's portrait was purchased by a merchant and carried into the next town. Over countless years it passed from owner to owner, until at last it returned to the blighted former home of murderer Amos Woodbine, the identity of its subject long forgotten. But the spell it cast had not lost its power.
The woman in charge of what was now the Morrisville Museum was unnerved by the painting and loaned it to an art gallery. Rose had waited for so long to find the right connection. Now she could feel it.
Her time was coming.

Suffering of a Witch by Suza Kates with Interview

Interview

1)      First, tell us about yourself – where  you live, your family, and those sorts of details.

I currently live in Savannah, Georgia with my husband. We’re empty-nesters now, with my stepson just having gone off to college. I still have my three children at home, though they walk on four paws and answer to “Kitty-kitty.”

2)      How long have you been writing?

Technically, about twelve years. I started writing in 2001, but back then it was more of a hobby. My first book came from my being stuck in a small apartment during a German winter. I’d read all the books I had in English, so I decided to write my own. It involved family, the South, and romantic suspense. I still have the printed copy in a box in my attic.  : ) I got serious about writing four years ago.

3)      Do you have a favorite place to write?

Actually, it’s always just been my office, but I recently discovered how nice it is to snuggle up on the couch with candles burning and write things out by hand. I tried putting together a “meditation” closet and speaking into voice-transcription program, but I couldn’t tell what I’d meant to say half the time when I finally got a look at it!

4)      Why did you decide to write Suffering of a Witch?

Well, the book that just released is the seventh in a series of nine. The Savannah Coven Series includes nine different witches, and they each get their own story. This book, “Suffering of a Witch,” has been building since book one, and readers seem very eager to find out what’s finally going to happen between the two main characters.

5)      Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

In this book, I’ll have to lean towards Quinn St. Germaine. I love them all equally, but I admire Quinn for his reliability and loyalty. He’d be a great brother or leading man!

6)      How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

I really don’t like Carson from the bad guys, the Amara. She actually bites when she fights, and for some reason, I itch to kill her off. Oops. Did that sound bloodthirsty?  : ]

7)      Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

In the beginning I did, but now I have three others who work on the books with me. I have a content editor, copy editor, and line editor. You’d be surprised how many sets of eyes it takes to catch every little typo. I call them Gremlins, because every time I catch one, it seems like five more have popped up!

8)      What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Read, watch horror/supernatural movies and occasionally sappy dramas, and I enjoy crafts. I used to do mosaics but don’t have the time anymore. And I love to garden. I have to admit, though, when I put a book to bed for good, I love taking a few days off to play a video game. (or two) PS3 is my guilty pleasure.

9)      Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

Yes, I read every night when my day is over. I have many favorites, but a few are Nora Roberts, Kathy Reichs, Dan Brown, Tess Gerritsen, Jennifer Estep, Kresley Cole, and I just discovered Julie Kagawa.

10)   What question do you wish that someone would ask about your book, but nobody has? Write it out here, then answer it.?

What aspects do you enjoy most about this book?

When I imagined the Savannah Coven Series, I wanted to create a place people would like to visit (the island mansion), a group of characters they might like to meet (the coven) and a sense of friendship and playfulness that would balance out the darker elements of the series. I really enjoy the interacting between the witches, and sometimes I’m even surprised by what they end up doing!

Book Description:

SHE WON’T GIVE UP

Kylie Worthington is in love with a man who doesn’t return the sentiment. She’s thrown away her pride and all attempts at pretense, yet Quinn St. Germaine still pushes her away. With the arrival of her trial, she will go where Fate dictates, to fight the vicious group, the Amara, and the demon that they serve. She’s also destined to fall in love, so at least she’ll finally find the man she was meant for. Whether she likes it or not.

HE WON’T GIVE IN

Quinn has spent his life preparing for his family’s prophecy, but no spell or book could have ever prepared him for Kylie. Her passion for him is strong—and persistent—but he must deny what she makes him feel. Too many years have passed him by and too many sacrifices have been made. Though he’s drawn to her beauty and vitality, deep inside he fears her. Quinn already knows what he wants, and accepting her means giving up on himself.

THEY BOTH WILL HURT

United in their battle against evil, Quinn and Kylie can’t see what’s right in front of them. And they never suspected what destiny had in store. Only the worst can bring them together, but will they be forever bound by love? Or by loss?

Excerpt

Balancing as she took cautious steps, Kylie noted the rough waves crashing against the coast. Had a storm come through? Was one on the way?
Quinn was waiting when she got ready to disembark. He held out his hand. “Come on. It’s rough tonight.”
You have no idea. He was especially handsome in the dark. All lean muscles and quiet strength. No moon in his eyes tonight, though. Only angry clouds.
She couldn’t take his hand. Couldn’t stand the heat that always struck deep to her core, making her feel safe and aroused all at once. She was already too amped up.
“Just take my hand, Kylie.” He’d read her hesitation for what it was, and the reminder of their strained relationship spurred his annoyance.
Reaching for him, she clamped her fingers around his, but as soon as their skin met, he jerked away from her. “Ow! Damn it!” His look was scathing. “I told you not to use your magic on me.”
With the wind kicking up and blowing hair in her face, Kylie chose to jump to the dock before she fell between hard wood and crushing boat. She landed cleanly. “I didn’t.”
“You shocked the hell out of me by accident?” His brows were scrunched together, his mouth tight.
“I—” She broke off when a searing yellow streak leapt from her hand toward Quinn. Tucking her palm against her stomach, she shook her head. “I didn’t. I promise.”
Another bolt materialized from the air above, striking between her feet and splintering into tiny white cracks of energy that shimmered into the planks. More roiling clouds barreled in from the east.
Lightning didn’t frighten Kylie. Though deadly to most, the strikes caused no pain. No injury. Not to her.
Electricity was her life force. Her special gift.
But she’d never been the center of an uncontrollable, miniature storm.
Magic sparked from her body now, moving toward the water, the wooden pier, and the beach beyond. It flew into the sky and from the clouds, shooting in both directions. The essence of her power was communing with the thunderheads.
No, the blistering flashes of pure energy didn’t have her quaking where she stood. Her trembling hands and heaving breaths were a response to something far more dangerous to her well-being.
Another crack split through her poorly-constructed foundation when her gaze clashed with Quinn’s. His eyes filled with recognition, understanding. He knew what the phenomenon meant.
She had to say it before he could cut her down with whatever words were forming in his head. “Quinn.” She held out her hands, harnessing the bolts, channeling them into her as they struck again and again. “My trial is starting.”
He nodded tightly. And gulped.
She couldn’t stay here any longer. “I’m going to the house.” Her little tempest was fading, now that she’d opened herself up and accepted her fate. Her calling. Her prophesied challenge.
But considerable damage had been done, and not by the power that pounded from the sky. She couldn’t stay with Quinn, because the expression on his face was a dagger to the heart.
Her trial had arrived, and it was her turn to face the Amara. To succeed in her own unique quest. And as destiny decreed— to fall in love.
Quinn knew the prophecy better than anyone. He knew its pattern. That’s why Kylie had to run. Why she couldn’t bear to see his reaction.
Because there was no doubt that her time had arrived.
And he was terrified.

The Perimeter by Shalini Boland

Interview

1) What can you tell us about The Outside Series?

Set in the near future, these three novels follow Riley as she overcomes the murder of her younger sister by tracking down the killer across a post-apocalyptic Britain. At the same time, she is forced to take on the might of a twisted regime intent on conquering the nation.
The story is full of action and adventure with a smattering of angsty romance. Books two and three become more darkly dystopian.

2) How do you develop your characters?

My characters grow as I write them. I always think of their upbringing and their circumstances and what bearing this will have on their actions. I try to put myself in their position - How would they really react in a particular situation?
I often back my characters into impossible situations or give them difficult dilemmas to deal with, that even I don’t know how to deal with. I hope this makes the story more unpredictable and the drama more realistic.
The naming process is very important to me. If a character has a good name, they can come alive. Sometimes, a minor character with a great name will try to take over and carve out a bigger role. I usually let them!

3) Who is your ideal reader?

Someone who likes the ‘what if …’ scenario: What if you were living your life and it took an unexpected twist?
My books are aimed at young adults, but I write the kinds of books that I would like to read myself – post-apocalyptic adventure and urban fantasy with a twist of horror and a dusting of romance. My current readers are aged anywhere from thirteen to seventy.

4) What was your journey as a writer?

I used to be a singer songwriter, signed to Universal Music. But it’s not a lifestyle that goes well with having a family and I found myself resenting the time spent away from my kids. I wasn’t successful enough to have nannies and entourages!
One day, I had an idea for a great ending to a story and I started scribbling my first novel. Writing fiction gave me the new creative outlet I needed. Plus, I can write from home and set my own timetable. I love it!

5) What is your writing process?

I don’t have a set-in-stone process. I usually have a rough plan and work my way steadily through the chapters, editing as I go.

6) What authors most inspire you?

Authors who can weave multiple plot lines with ease, whose characters evoke strong emotions and who can keep you guessing till the end. I’m in awe of Carlos Ruis Zafon, Laini Taylor, Stephenie Meyer, Suzanne Collins and Paullina Simons.

7) What books, written by someone else, do you wish you'd written yourself?

Life of Pi by Yann Martel, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins or Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor.

8) Outside is a YA post-apocalyptic series. Can you tell us a bit more about it?

Set in the near future, it looks at what might happen if society-as-we-know-it collapsed. It follows the story of Riley who lives safely behind the Perimeter Fence. After her sister is murdered, she decides to brave the ‘outside’ to track down the killer and she persuades her neighbour, Luc, to go with her.
In addition to its post-apocalyptic setting, Outside is also a coming-of-age love story with a heap of adventure and some unexpected twists along the way. Book 2, The Clearing, is darker and more sinister. And in Book 3, The Perimeter, the tension ramps up even further with a ton of suspense and action.

9) Who is your favourite character in the book and why?

My favourite character is Riley as she acts with bravery despite being terrified most of the time. She’s lived a life of privilege, but shows great guts and determination after her sister’s death. It would have been easy for her to wallow in her grief, but instead, she’s pro-active.
Writing her from a first person perspective allows the reader to see her fears up close, but as the series progresses, she finds more courage and ways to deal with all the trials and adversities she must face as she braves the ravaged world.

10) What was the hardest part of the book to write?

There are two storylines running through the novel and it was quite tricky to make the sequence of events tie up in the right place. The story also has a few major twists and it took me several attempts to get the reveals right. I hope I did it justice in the end.

Book & Author Details:

The Perimeter, blurb:

In this fractured world, a sinister force is coming for Riley, and the only things keeping her safe are a perimeter fence and the people she loves. As her life is threatened, she must make impossible choices. But help comes from the most unlikely of places, and all Riley needs to know is: who can she really trust?

Meanwhile, a repentant killer searches for peace and salvation, but what he gets is the exact opposite. Now he’ll have to make the hardest decision of his life.

The Perimeter is a darkly captivating dystopian tale of adventure, danger, love and redemption that will have you on the edge of your seat and up at night turning the pages to find out what happens next . . .

Excerpt

The two men were youngish with beards, wearing layers of filthy clothing. One of them had a face-full of piercings – lip rings, eyebrow studs and a hoop through his nose. They were both skinny and hollow-cheeked with deep-set eyes. As they drew closer, I saw pure hostility in their faces and it took all my strength of will not to throw the truck into reverse and gun it all the way home.
‘What’s your business here?’ the man with the nose hoop called out.
I lowered the window a fraction. ‘I’m a friend of Lou’s.’
‘Lou?’ They took a few steps closer, their weapons still lowered.
‘Yeah. Fair-haired girl with two younger brothers. Lives up close to the compound wall.’
‘I know who Lou is,’ nose-hoop replied. ‘What d’you want with her?’
‘She helped me out yesterday. I’ve come to say thanks.’
‘Get out of the truck and I’ll fetch her over.’
‘I’d rather stay inside till she gets here if that’s okay.’
They stopped a few yards away and talked to each other in low tones so I couldn’t hear. By now, several other gypsies had come close to the wire fence to see what was going on. I’d started to cause a bit of a stir – exactly what I hadn’t wanted to do.
‘Out of the truck,’ nose-hoop repeated, aiming his rifle at the windscreen. ‘Slowly. Hands in the air.’
I hadn’t come here for a gunfight, so it didn’t look as though I had much choice. I would have to do as he asked.

Outside Series blurb:

At the same time, she is forced to take on the might of a twisted regime intent on conquering the nation. The series is packed with action, suspense, drama and dystopian adventure.

Reviews for SIA
“A compelling read full of intrigue, romance, and lots of surprises. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next!” - Jennifer Read Hawthorne, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“There have been very few books that made me think they made to someday become a movie (i.e. Warm Bodies, The Host). And I guess Sia can join the club, because this book, I say, is perfect for it. I felt like I was reading a script for a movie, the plot is fantastic and the characters are great, there's a little of humor as well as tragic situations.” -Bookish Randomness

“Well I finished this book amazingly fast. This whole book will leave you amused, intrigued, in awe, and most importantly in love with the whole story line until the very last word. I'll have to go with 5 stars for this book.”  - Lovely Reads

“Beautifully written…this one will have you reflecting on your current and past actions. Although a fiction, Sia inspires.” –A Starry-eyed Heart Review
