 “Hey.”
Whipping around, she aimed a canister squarely at his…chest. The canister lifted to eye level before she recognized him and startled, her lips parting on a gasp.
“Are you haunting me already?” she asked. He fought back a laugh at the exasperation in her tone. “I said we’d work together on it. No need for creepy stalking.”
He couldn’t hold back. The laugh escaped as he raised his hands in the universal sign of surrender. “Don’t shoot.”
She eyed the canister as if she’d forgotten it was in her hand. “Oh.” Tucking it away in her purse, she turned the way she’d been heading and started walking. He kept pace beside her.
“I wasn’t stalking. Yet.” He glanced at her in time to catch a flash of her pretty smile. “I live in Belltown. Sort of.”
“Meaning?” Her eyes flickered over to him, punching into him midchest every time they did.
“Temporary housing when I’m working in town. I actually live in Graham.”
She stopped walking to stare outright. “I never would have guessed."
Catching her hand, he tugged her forward again with a wary glance at the lightening sky. “Why so? Is it that hard to see me in cowboy boots?”
“No. Uhm…yes.” She studied their joined hands for several beats before carefully extricating hers.
“I’m a rural kind of guy.” He shook his head. “But I draw the line at the Stetson. It’s a baseball cap for me.”
“Now that, I can see.” Her laugh was sweetly melodic and appeared to take her by surprise. A giddy sensation skated along his nerves. “I’m right up here.” She gestured toward a fairly dilapidated apartment building, and her lingering smile took a wry turn. “I know. It’s not much, but it’s affordable. It even has a doorman.”
He followed her gaze. A fat, blue-haired cat with a sour expression, ears back and all, lounged at the top step leading into the building.
“He seems intimidating enough.”
“She is quite the guardian angel.”
He grinned again, his cheeks protesting the unaccustomed happy shit going on since he’d met her. “Speaking of guardian angel, you handled yourself pretty damn well back there.”
“No, I handled them. A girl has to defend herself.”
“That she does,” he said. An uncomfortable burning sensation spread over his skin, and his eyes again went to the sky. “Damn. I have to go.”
“Oh. Wait!” She stepped closer, and that kicked feeling struck his chest again. He rubbed at it absently through his T-shirt. “Can I meet you tonight?” She did her lip-biting thing again, making his mouth water. “I mean…about the case?”
“Of course. I’ll come to the VLO as soon as I’m able.”
“You’ll come to the VLO?” Her disbelief caught him off guard.
“Why not?” His brow furrowed. “I’ve been there plenty to work on rogue cases.”
A shake of her head sent a stray lock of hair over her eye. She tucked it behind her ear and then ignored it when it slid right back where it had been. His fingers tingled with the urge to run through the silk of it.
“I’ve just never seen you there.”
“So I would have caught your eye?” He couldn’t help teasing. The hazy, rising light revealed a deepening blush on her cheeks, which sent a ripple of pleasure through him.
She scoffed, but couldn’t meet his gaze. “Hardly.”
“I’m usually on the second floor with the investigators.” He had let her off the hook. What was wrong with him? Sun-addled. He had to be. And he’d best get the hell out of Dodge before he couldn’t drag himself home. As it was, he’d have to flash to make it to safety. “Tonight then.”

The Newfoundland Vampire: Killer on the Road by Charles O'Keefe with Interview

Interview

1)      First, tell us about yourself – where  you live, your family, and those sorts of details.

Hi, I’m Charles O’Keefe. I’m 37, I live in Newfoundland, Canada (Conception Bay South to be a little more precise), I’m married, no kids, two cats, a niece and nephew. I’d love to say I work only as a writer but I also have a 9-5 job where I work with my brother in a beauty wholesale business. I try to eat healthy (I’m a vegetarian), help animals and the environment and get exercise too.

2)      How long have you been writing?

While I did some writing in university for a student paper, I’d only consider my serious writing career having started in March of 2010, so a little over 3 years.

3)      Do you have a favorite place to write?

Yes it would be either here at this little nook between the kitchen and the TV room or in the kitchen, taking breaks to look out my window. I write best when I’m home and it’s quiet.

4)      Why did you decide to write “Killer on the Road”?

“Killer on the Road” is a direct sequel to “The Newfoundland Vampire” and I couldn’t just end it there. More precisely though I was on vacation back in September 2011, my first book had just been accepted for publication and I felt I wanted to keep going. I just had this overwhelming feeling that I wasn’t done, I had more to say to the world. My characters, Joseph and Cassandra, had more to do. So I kept going and the rough draft of book 2 was done by November of 2012.

5)      Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

Even though Joseph is me (more or less) I would have to pick Cassandra, the other main character. She is always fun to write and is the first character that felt real to me. It felt like she was just waited for more to do, for her imaginary left to continue.

6)      How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

I wrote a character in book one named Thomas, he was weak, pathetic and subservient. Specifically though it seemed a waste to introduce a character only to kill him in the same book. I like to have characters stick around a while and give them a fuller story arc.

7)      Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

I do a little bit of proofreading/editing (okay a LOT for book 1) but I am lucky to have the support of  Pat, my editor. She does a great job and I hope I get to work with her and the great folks at Penumbra for years to come.

8)      What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I enjoy reading, walking, movies, TV, Pilates, martial arts, poker, video games and going to concerts. I also quite like to travel, though that can include writing as well.

9)      Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

I don’t read as much as I used to, writing and other hobbies take up a lot of time. I do have some favorite authors though, Stephen King, Richard Matheson, Jamie Wasserman, George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway.

10)   Why did you dedicate two books to two different cats?

I’m a huge lover of animals, always have been. To me my cats (and in particular the two I’ve dedicated both books to) are more than just pets. Frank was my special friend (he sadly died in early 2011) and an unusual cat. He was all white, deaf, had two different colored eyes and will always have a special place in my heart. Fortunately, we had two other cats and as I found a way to work another cat, Jude, into my second book I dedicated it to him. Jude is all black, has one messed up eye (that happened in a fight but he can still see out of both) and is so affectionate and good, he is also my special friend. The love of an animal is so simple and pure, I think we can all learn something from the way a pet treats us and I think having a pet that is an experience everyone should have.

Book Description:

Joseph O’Reily is still adjusting to the lifestyle and the dangers that come with being a new vampire. He and Cassandra recently fought to the death with Cassandra’s estranged husband John Snow, and now Joseph has experienced his first ménage a trios, as only a vampire can. As if all of this was not complicated enough, he and Cassandra have been tasked with hunting down and killing a rogue vampire, Donald Rathmore.

Another of John Snow’s creations, Donald is an evil misogynistic killer in his own right. Donald has no interest in avenging his creator’s death, but killing Cassandra is at the top of his list.

While Donald continues his murderous spree, Joseph and Cassandra always seem to be one step behind him. The chase is further complicated as they encounter other vampires and learn more about the mysterious nature of the Vampire Council and the coming war between good and evil.
Joseph is only now beginning to trust Cassandra, and this trust will be shaken when he discovers she has even more secrets than he imagined. Her idea of justice and morality is at complete odds with his own. Despite all his powers and growing skill, Joseph is tested physically as a vampire and emotionally by Cassandra. This time the answers and challenges may be too much for the young vampire to handle.

Prologue
My Bonny Lies Over the Ocean

Anne Bonny sat on the beach of Green Island, Hawaii, sipping a mai tai as she admired the view of the sunset. The sky began to turn crimson red, which helped dull the intense headache she suffered as a vampire up before dark.
She resided near what was thought to be an abandoned Coast Guard station, which secretly harbored her mansion underground and several paid servants and guards. Underneath a run-down airstrip lay a subterranean waterway where a submarine was docked. The submarine was used primarily for the human servants that needed to leave the island to fetch supplies or take vacations. The runway itself could still handle flight landings if a friend popped in for a visit.
Anne, like many vampires, was quite wealthy. Wise investments over enough time provided financial comfort that most well-to-do humans accumulated only through inheritance, corporate sharking, or a serendipitous blend of ideas, timing, and networking. The simple truth was, the duration of a human life was usually too short to build the financial stability to which most vampires were accustomed. Like most vampires, Anne chose not to flaunt her wealth. Going unnoticed made it easier to hide from humans. Peace and quiet was easy to obtain on a deserted island.
She had always loved tropical locations, and the Hawaiian Islands were so near the equator that the temperature almost never changed. She also loved sunsets so much that it was worth the suffering and slight risk of being out in the open before full dark. Green Island was primarily a bird sanctuary now, with the occasional monk seals that showed up on the beaches. Anne didn’t hate animals, but she killed a few birds that had the audacity to crap on her head one afternoon. At night, her vampire presence kept them away. In case something happened to her human servants, she could call out to a seal for assistance.
She sang to herself, “My bonny lies over the ocean; my bonny lies over the sea...” She liked that song, even though it wasn’t about her. As she sang and took another sip from her drink, she closed her eyes and grimaced in pain. This was a different kind of pain from that of a vampire out in the day. She knew that her estranged youngling John was in terrible danger and perhaps faced death. Despite the pain, she smiled and reclined easily on her lounger. “Serves the bastard right,” she whispered to herself. “He was my biggest regret in life. His charms fooled me, and I made him one of us. It’s time his life was brought to an end.”
Anne sighed, feeling better as the sun dipped near the horizon. She thought of that spring day in 1834 Newfoundland. John was a handsome man who exuded charisma and confidence. A hundred and thirty years didn’t seem so long ago. Time was relative when one was immortal. Still, she should have vetted John Snow and read his thoughts before turning him. But she was horny, hungry, and foolish. She not only bit him but kissed him afterwards with blood still on her lips. She didn’t see the harm in turning a wealthy fisherman. She realized too late that he was married, and she vowed not to cause the destruction of his marriage. When she saw him shot and dropped into the ocean, she thought that was the end of him, but she was wrong once more. Fish, it seemed, didn’t like the taste of vampires, and she learned that even a shot to the head and an injury to the brain would heal. Many years later, she heard of his rash actions, but didn’t want to admit to the Council that she had caused the mess. Best let them deal with it in their own way.
Newfoundland had seemed like a good place for a pirate to go – Peter Easton, Black Bart, and George Fielding all had frequented the area in years gone by. She enjoyed her life as a pirate. She loved to capture booty, but didn’t delight in slaughter.
Then she thought back to October, 1720, in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. She had been imprisoned there and convicted of piracy. Luckily she had dreamt of her own capture and had grown her belly in the two weeks prior, so as to appear pregnant. It was a simple matter then to ‘plead the belly,’ as it was known at the time, and receive a stay of execution. This stay gave her a chance to escape and resume her pirate career disguised as a man. By 1860, with Albert Hicks hung for piracy in the US, she knew it was time to stop. The world had changed, and she had to change with it. Riverboat gambling was easy money. She did enjoy being on the water and the attention men paid her.
Anne took another sip of her drink and concentrated. John was fortunate that the sun was about to set, and her powers were activated in time. A man in a white shirt and shorts came over to her. “Excuse me, mistress. May I get you another drink?”
Anne opened her eyes. “No, Charles, I’d like to be alone for a few minutes. Take away the glass and bring me my cell phone in a bit.”
The man nodded. “As you wish.” He took the glass and left.
Anne resumed her concentration, and John entered her mind fully. He thought to her, Anne. my dear, my own youngling Catherine and this motherfucker Joseph are about to kill me. If you ever cared for me, avenge my death. I am in Newfoundland, and I will give you my last images so you will know their faces.
Anne snorted and thought back, Go fuck yourself, John. I just wish you had died in 1834 instead of living this long. Anne received no reply, but did see through John’s eyes at his moment of death. She saw a statue of Peter Pan, animals at his feet, and a lot of blood. She saw a woman with beautiful long, red curly hair who looked terribly wounded in her chest, and man who seemed to have been shot as he stabbed John with a sharpened wooden stick.
Anne gasped as her own chest hurt terribly for a second. And then she received one final thought from John. They are watching us.
Anne waited for the pain to fade and rubbed her chest right above her heart. She snorted again and grumbled to herself, “Tell me something I don’t know.”
With the sun gone down, she sat up and smiled, absently admiring her slim, athletic figure in her gold bikini. She tossed back her fiery red hair, kept straight at shoulder length. “My dear John,” she said aloud, “your death, and these other vampires in Newfoundland, are enough to pique my interest.”
The last remnants of the sun disappeared below the horizon, and Anne felt her senses fully come to life. She heard Charles’ heartbeat and smelled the sweetness of his blood. As he approached, she stood and held out her hand for the phone. Charles said in his accustomed manner, “Are you hungry, mistress?” He passed her the phone and stretched his neck to one side.
Anne smiled. “Yes, Charles, you’ll have the next few days off, as I will drain you deeply. Remember, until you pass out, that I liked to be fondled. I’ll make certain Michael carries you to sickbay.”
Charles nodded. “Of course, mistress. Thank you for choosing me tonight.”
Anne took the phone and clipped in on the back of her bikini bottom. She took off Charles’ shirt and sunk her teeth into his neck. He tasted lovely, with not a hint of drugs or alcohol, and had a pleasant taste of cinnamon in his blood. She also enjoyed his ministrations, but she became more excited at the thought of sex with another vampire. It had been too long since she’d enjoyed the company of others of her kind. Any vampire capable of destroying John must be worth my interest.
She drained Charles until his heartbeat started to slow and he drifted into unconsciousness. Anne cared for her servants, the way a pet owner cared for her animals, and she laid him gently on the sand. She took the cell phone out and punched in the mansion number. She didn’t allow time for a greeting but simply stated, “Have a boat waiting on the southeastern end of Midway Island. I’ll whistle loudly. Also, prepare the sub and head off for Honolulu. I’ll be there in a few days. Make sure it has my weapons on board. Oh, and send Michael down to take Charles to sickbay. He’ll need a few days off.”
The reply came instantly. “Of course, mistress, right away.”
Anne tucked the cell phone into Charles’ right front pocket and, after a brief glance at the first stars that came into view, dived into the ocean. The water was warm against her cool skin. She could easily swim in the Arctic and break through ice if necessary, but this was much more pleasant. Fish, dolphins, sharks and the occasional whale all moved out of her way as she cut through the water like a knife. She had been an excellent swimmer as a human, and when she was turned, her swimming speed and skill reached legendary levels. She could easily swim thirty kilometers an hour at night and go for eight to ten hours with a belly full of blood. Like all vampires, she had an uncanny sense of direction and knew she was headed for Midway Island. She planned to reach it just before sunrise. Perhaps, when she got to Newfoundland, she would find a new companion or at least some friends. John had created Catherine, after all, and she did at least owe her an apology. She wondered if this Joseph had experienced a blood embrace. In any case, he had not done it with her.
It would take her weeks to get there this way, but she was in no rush. Anticipation was a wonderful thing, and time was certainly on her side.

Book Description:

Like every other geek alive, Newfoundland native Joseph O’Reily secretly wants to be a superhero. At thirteen he fantasized about being a vampire, and ten years later he’s still fantasizing – but mostly about a beautiful redheaded woman who has eyes only for him. The one thing different about Joseph’s adult fantasy is that, amazingly, it comes true one night when he goes to a local university pub. Cassandra Snow, literally the woman of his dreams, invites him to her place for an evening of personal pleasure. Of course he’s not going to say no. But when strange things start happening afterward, Joseph quickly learns that not all dreams should come true.

The Black Parade by Kyoko M. with Guest Post

Character Development

For me, the hardest thing about character development is balancing organic inner turmoil while still making the character someone that the readers care about. In fact, it’s one of the toughest challenges that I deal with as I write because Jordan is such a defensive, closed-off character. She can come off as a jerk at times, but it’s due to her rough past and her fear of being hurt again.

Whenever I write her, I take a moment to consider why she reacts a certain way and how it is tied to who she is as a person. I recall the words of Rachel Dawes from Batman Begins, “It’s not who you are underneath. It’s what you do that defines you.” To me, that means that it doesn’t matter who I think Jordan is deep down. Her actions and her words have to prove what lies beneath. I link up the two ideas to see if they match up. Who is Jordan Amador? What do her actions say about her? Sure, she’s prickly but she still fights for the good guys and she still believes in Michael no matter how she feels about him. Her personality and her morals should be what guide the story from start to finish, and I believe that it should feel natural to the reader instead of contrived or forced. Many successful writers advise to write from the character outward, and this is something I tried to adopt when I wrote The Black Parade. I began with Jordan and build the world around her and filled it with our supporting cast and our villains.

The biggest struggle I had with writing The Black Parade came in the third act where Jordan and Michael’s relationship comes to a point where they have to make a decision. Their friendship has been running parallel to some pretty strong romantic feelings, and while they have plenty of reasons why they shouldn’t be together, it’s not something they can both put off indefinitely. By that time in the novel, Jordan’s been with Michael long enough to get a full perspective of who he is as a man and as an angel. She has to decide how to react to him and how she feels about him, and all of that is wrapped up in her past. She had once been in a long term relationship that went nuclear after she became a Seer and she doesn’t want to give up having a best friend for the first time in her life.

At the end of the day, it’s not our job as writers to make the readers happy, but rather to write something that is worthy of their time. First and foremost, I want the character development to feel natural and while the reader might disagree with decisions the characters make, if they can still understand why they acted a certain way, then mission accomplished. I also believe in permanent changes that cannot be easily reversed, because otherwise it can seem like you’re chickening out of a character’s arc. Their actions should be consistent with their personality and their beliefs, but that’s harder than it sounds when you’re also balancing an entire plot on their shoulders. Often, I’ve written a scene that made logical sense, but I had to scrap it because it was out of character.

My advice to other writers would be to simply tell the truth. Whatever is true for your characters—no matter how disturbing or absurd—should be what’s on your pages. Go with your gut. Don’t be so caught up with making something happen that you lose the integrity of the story. You can’t write it wrong if you’re writing what’s true for your characters and their desires.

Book Description:

One bullet is all it took to transform eighteen-year-old New Yorker Jordan Amador into the last hope for souls of the dead. However, it also transformed her into a cantankerous asocial waitress with a drinking problem.

Jordan accidentally shot and killed a Seer: a person who can communicate with ghosts, angels, and demons. Worse still, she did so on the eve of her own awakening, making her the last Seer on Earth with no one to guide her. As penance, God gives her two years to help one hundred souls with unfinished business cross over from Earth to the afterlife or she will go to Hell. Just as she approaches the deadline, Jordan finds her hundredth soul: a smart-mouthed poltergeist named Michael whose ability to physically touch things makes him distinct from her usual encounters with the dead. However, the deeper she delves solving his sudden death, the more she realizes something sinister is on the horizon.

With time running short, Jordan stumbles across a plot that may unravel the fragile balance among Heaven, Hell, and Earth. Her life is plunged into chaos as she is hunted by demons that want to use her valuable Seer blood to bring about the end of the world and discovers that these creatures have a frightening connection to her family bloodline. Plus, the budding romance between Jordan and Michael makes it harder for them to let go of each other so he can become part of the eternal black parade.

Excerpt

My head throbbed. It felt like my brain was trying to hammer its way through my skull and into the outside world. A pained groan crawled out of my throat and escaped my dry lips. As I regained consciousness, I realized I was lying on a bed of some kind. The mattress had way too many springs in it so they poked my spine like needles. My eyelids fluttered for a second and a wave of nausea hit. I pressed my palm to my forehead as if it would help. That was when I realized the necklace around my wrist was gone.
“Sleep well?”
I heard a purring baritone voice from the corner of the white room. My eyes shot open. Ignoring the nausea and dizziness, I frantically pushed myself up to a sitting position. There stood the longhaired man who came to unlock Jacob’s files. He leaned his lanky frame against the far wall, smoking a cigarette. The black suit stood out stark against the pristine paint behind him.
I swallowed hard and tried to get a bearing on where I was. No windows. The door didn’t have a knob, either. From what I could tell, this was either an operating room or somewhere they put the patients who were a threat to themselves or the hospital staff. It was also rather small—no more than an eight by eight foot room, not much bigger than the bathroom in my apartment.
The man continued to watch me with a cool expression. The eerie patience on his face made me realize I hadn’t replied to his comment. As if I really knew what to say to the man who had just kidnapped me. I went for the casual approach.
“You’re not allowed to smoke in hospitals.”
He chuckled deeply enough to shake his broad shoulders. I took a moment to analyze his weight and strength. Could I take him? Most likely, no. Would I try it anyway? Hell yeah.
“You’re right, I suppose. Still, I can’t help loving these things.” He flicked the cancer stick to the linoleum floor and stomped it out.
“Humans come up with the most wonderful things to destroy themselves with.”
A red flag popped up in my mind. Please God, no. “Pardon?”
The man walked towards me and fear wormed its way up my stomach, settling in my chest. He had a heavy presence about him that confirmed my suspicion.
“I’m hurt, Jordan. You don’t recognize me?”
My whole body tensed. He leaned over the bed until our faces were level, placing his arms on either side of me. I had to ball my hands into fists to keep them from trembling. I looked into his eyes. They were a chillingly blue hue with reptilian pupils. I’d seen them before.
“Belial.”
He tilted his head to the side, and a sheet of that fine black hair slid across the side of his face. It brushed my cheek and made me flinch. “Did you miss me?”
“Not particularly.” I hated how afraid my voice sounded.
The demon smiled in a way I imagine a snake would at a mouse. “I suppose not. There’s no need for you to be scared of me this time. If I was going to kill you, I’d have done it while you slept.”
I licked my lips, mind racing to think rationally. “Like I believe that. Killing me while I was unconscious wouldn’t be any fun. You’d want to do it while I was awake and screaming, right?”
His sadistic smile widened. “My, my. We are getting to know each other, aren’t we?”
“If you’re not going to kill me, then would you mind getting the hell out of my personal space?”
“Why? Am I making you uncomfortable?” He tilted his head so that our lips were almost touching.
I took a deep breath, preparing to deck him if he dared kiss me. “No, I just hate that cologne you’re wearing. My ex-boyfriend used to wear it.”
Belial’s eyes widened like I’d surprised him. He stood to his full height, letting out another one of those creepy chuckles. “You really are an interesting girl.”
Now that I had my personal space back, the tension slid out of my rigid spine. I rested my feet on the floor. Whatever happened, I needed to be off this bed. It was clear that the demon had designs on my soul, but my body was a whole different issue. Better to play it safe. Or as safe as I could with a creature from Hell that wanted me to be his pet for all eternity.
“I aim to please,” I said. “Now get to the point. If you’re not going to kill me, what do you want?”
The smile remained intact, unnerving the hell out of me. He could give the Joker a run for his money with that thing. “The same thing I wanted before, my dear. Your soul.”
I glanced around the bare room. “I don’t see another spear lying around. How are you going to pull that off?”
“Persuasion.” To my surprise, he began unbuttoning his suit jacket, revealing a cobalt blue dress shirt beneath it.
I lifted an eyebrow. “No offense, but nudity is not going to win me over.”
Belial let out an amused snort after he tossed the jacket aside, rolling up the sleeves to the shirt. “As appealing as that sounds, that’s not what I’m going to do. I thought I’d give you a fair chance to fight for your soul. If you win, I’ll let you go. If I win, you agree to go through a ceremony that will bind us together for all eternity.”
There it was. He had a trap, a plan, and I’d played right into it by coming to this hospital.
I stood and crossed my arms underneath my chest. “Do you honestly expect me to believe a demon would keep his word? What makes you think I’d agree to something like this?”
“Because, dear Jordan, you are running out of time.”

Like any author, she wants nothing more than to contribute something great to the best profession in the world, no matter how small.

Borealis = Shadow of A Man by Maria Hammarblad with Guest Post

The importance of world building

I am a creator of worlds. Sounds cool, doesn’t it? To some extent, every fiction writer is a creator of worlds, but this part of drafting a story is extra important when it comes to science fiction and fantasy. The world has to work. All the details might not be in the story, but if the writer doesn’t know basic facts about the world, readers will feel something’s missing.

If the world isn’t believable, the entire story fails. If it’s real enough for readers’ imagination to take them there, the story and the characters have a solid foundation.

The first time someone asked me how I build my worlds I answered, “Uuh.” For me, the world isn’t a separate thing from the story. The world, the storyline, and the characters develop together, and each is dependent on the others. They take shape as I write and re-write.

The environment has to match the characters’ motivation. What they do or don’t do will be connected to the world they live in, it’s challenges, and benefits.

What do they eat, and why? Where do they get the food? Does someone grow it, build it in a lab, or catch it on a desolate planet? How is it transported? Who decides who works with what? How do people stay clean? How do they clean their clothes? Are there practical considerations to their buildings? There are a million or so questions, and the answers must be feasible.

When it comes to my new novella Shadow of a Man, it is number XII in a series of books written by different authors, but set in the same world. The stories are centered on a dilapidated space station – Borealis – and the time is distant future. This posed a new and exciting challenge, because the world was already created and well established.

Readers who enter Borealis through my story must feel at home with it, and readers who have gone through the entire series must recognize themselves and feel comfortable. I read the preceding stories several times, wanting to pick up details I could refer to, so the audience will know my Borealis is the same as Jay Morgan’s or Stephanie Burkhart’s.

My publisher also created a “Borealis bible.” It contains important details such as recurring characters, names of foods, curses, planets, weapons, stores, pets, you name it. This attention to detail makes it possible for a large number of writers to craft widely different stories – some are humorous, some thrilling, and some romantic – and still allow a sense of continuity. This is what world building is all about.

Book Description:

There might be a place Theresa fears more than Borealis, but she can't think of one. The old and decrepit station houses all sorts of cruelty, and to make it better, this is where her husband Dominic was imprisoned, drugged, and tortured. He returned a mere shadow of his old self, scarred by abuse and Uudon withdrawal.

Borealis is the last place Theresa wants to go, and the only one she can't escape. Dominic's apparent madness does nothing to alleviate her fears. Her once sweet husband has turned into a womanizing monster, and will destroy anyone who gets in her way.

Geo, her faithful and all too handsome bodyguard, appears to be the only one on her side. He once helped rescue Dominic, and pays for the insurrection with a lifetime on the run. This might be a situation not even he can handle, and Theresa fears none of them will make it out alive.

About the Author :

Born in Sweden in the early 1970's, Maria showed a large interest for books at an early age. Even before she was able to read or write, she made her mom staple papers together into booklets she filled with drawings of suns and planets. She proudly declared them, "The Sun Book." They were all about the sun. She also claimed, to her mother's horror, that her being on Earth was a big mistake and that her alien family would come and bring her home at any moment. This never happened, but both the interest in space and the passion for bookmaking stayed with her.

As an adult Maria's creativity got an outlet through playing bass in a number of rock bands, and through writing technical manuals and making web pages for various companies and organizations. She did write drafts for a few novels, but the storytelling muse was mostly satisfied through role playing online on Myspace. It was here, while writing stories together with people from around the globe, she stumbled onto Mike. They started talking out of character, and she moved over to Florida to him late 2008. Today the two are married and live in the Tampa Bay area with three rescue dogs.

Besides writing and playing bass, Maria enjoys driving off-road, archery, and Tameshigiri.

New Page up for discussion

I am not good most of the time getting my thoughts and feelings down to share either in writing or verbally. Today I put in writing what being a survivor means to me. I have read it and reread it, I hope it is good enough. As they are my thoughts and feelings. I am a survivor.

The Order of the Rose by Alysha King

Synopsis

“You possess a power as great as that of the false Empress. You do not understand it yet but you will come to learn its true nature. It is the only match to true evil. You doubt it, but you must embrace it or you will fail.”

Little is she prepared though for what lies ahead - an all-powerful empire and a murderous Empress, a seemingly impossible quest to rescue her family, and a power so dark that Carey begins to doubt her very existence.

About the Author

KATY REGNERY, winner of several regional RWA contests, has always loved telling a good story and credits her mother with making funny, heartwarming tales come alive throughout her childhood. A lifelong devotee of all romance writing from Edwardian to present-day, it was just a matter of time before Katy tried her hand at writing a love story of her own.

As it turned out, one love story turned into a series of five Heart of Montana romances, following the love lives of the Yellowstone-based Lindstrom siblings. In addition to small-town contemporary romance, Katy is presently writing a paranormal romance that takes place in northern New England and the forests north of Quebec.

Speaking of forests, Katy lives in the relative-wilds of northern Fairfield County, Connecticut where her writing room looks out at the woods and her husband, two young children and two dogs create just enough cheerful chaos to remind her that the very best love stories of all are the messy and unexpected ones.
