VBT - Hell's Belle by Karen Greco with Interview

Interview:

1)      First, tell us about yourself – where  you live, your family, and those sorts of details.

I grew up in Rhode Island, and ended up in NYC after a detour in Connecticut for college. I live in New Jersey at the moment, just over the GWB, with my husband and daughter, along with a dog and fish. (The fish is a recent addition.)

2)      How long have  you been writing?

Pretty much most of my life. Short stories when I was in grade school, then plays as I got older. I ended up doing journalism and public relations for a career, so loads of writing in my day job, just of a different sort.

3)      Do you have a favorite place to write?

I am sure I would if my schedule allowed it! I am kind of "have lap top, will travel" with my writing. My day job keeps me so busy lately that I have to squeeze my writing in where I can, and sometimes that means writing on buses and subways.

4)      Why did you decide to write Hells' Belle?

I had so many starts and stops with writing projects, and this one just kept going. After I was about 10,000 words in, I felt like it was worth finishing, and committed myself to doing it.

5)      Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

Oh wow. That's a hard question to answer. Obviously, I love Nina, my main character. But Aunt Babe is pretty awesome. She may be my favorite. Frankie's up there too.

6)      How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

Marcello, one of the bad guys, is completely unappealing, and that's his purpose! In my head he is just a nasty, gross, drooling vampire.
Surprisingly, I really love Ami Bertrand, who is totally a bad guy. But he can be a good guy if it serves his purpose. He operates in shades of grey, and I love that.

7)      Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

Oh I so cannot proof and edit my own work! I need eyes! I have a brilliant editor who works with me on the shaping and development of the work. And I have a terrific copy editor as well, he's there to nitpick my mistakes. Both of them are from "Big 6" publishing houses, so I trust them completely with my work. But I also have about 5 - 10 pairs of eyes on the book too -- family and friends -- who catch my errors. My husband is pretty ruthless.

8)      What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

When I am not working or writing, I am spending time with my husband and kid. I feel like I don't get to see enough of them.

9)      Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

I read a lot of urban fantasy and horror. I will read anything by Richard Kadrey and Mike Carey. Chris Ward's Tube Riders was also a terrific read, and I am really looking forward to his next book in that series. And I am obsessed with George RR Martin and Game of Thrones. The world building, all the characters... It leaves me pretty awestruck. I have no idea how he keeps it all straight!

10)   What question do you wish that someone would ask about your book, but nobody has? Write it out here, then answer it.

I don't think anyone has asked me WHY I love urban fantasy. So.. Karen, why do you love urban fantasy?

I guess why do we love anything, right? Sometimes we just can't help it! But I love the freedom the genre gives me to create alternate worlds that are not completely unlike the world we live in, but something is just a little off. I love that the women in the genre are usually kick ass and don't need a guy to take care of things. In some ways, the genre asks the reader to be just as creative as the writer. As a reader, you need to seriously suspend your disbelief and live in this strange hybrid place that seems completely familiar but suddenly completely up-ends your notion of normal. It can be frustrating when people say, "Oh, that would never happen!" Really? In urban fantasy, it very well could!

Book Description:

Half-vampire, half-human, Nina Martinez spent most of her life underground as part of an elite secret team of government agents who quietly take down rogue monsters -- the human world none the wiser.

She moves back to her hometown of Providence, RI to keep an eye on the recent uptick in supernatural activity, and to help run the bar she co-owns with her aunt. Her attempt at a “regular” life, not to mention a budding relationship with smoking hot FBI agent Max, is cut short because of a string of ritual murders targeting the city's community of witches.

But Nina's investigation unearths deadly secrets from her long buried parents. Now the target of supernatural assassins, could Nina be the most dangerous vampire hybrid to ever exist? No wonder she can’t get a date.

An urban fantasy set in a decaying Providence, Rhode Island, HELL'S BELLE is a fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled roller-coaster ride through a city on the cusp of becoming an urban wasteland. An energetic, expansive, and cinematic, HELL'S BELLE was called "captivating" by Kirkus Reviews.

Book Chick City gave it 5-stars, calling it "one of the best urban fantasies I have read this year!"
