Hell Without You by Ranae Rose with Interview

Interview

1) First, tell us about yourself – where  you live, your family, and those sorts of details.

I’m a Maryland native, but I’ve moved often (I’m the daughter of a US Marine, so that’s been the norm for me since childhood). Right now I live on the US East Coast with my husband, son and German Shepherd dogs. I’m also going on seven months pregnant right now, so soon there’ll be a new addition to the family (it’s a girl!).

2) How long have  you been writing?

Since age 5 or 6. (When I started out, I mostly stuck to plagiarizing Sesame Street picture books.) I was determined to become an author since that age, and continued writing throughout my life… Let’s just say there were a lot of early efforts that will (thankfully) never see the light of day!

3) Do you have a favorite place to write?

Yes. The big plush recliner in my office. I fantasized about having this office and comfy chair for years before it became a reality, and it’s everything I imagined. LOL

4) Why did you decide to write Hell Without You?

My stories start out as ideas (they develop subconsciously, I guess) that take root in my mind and demand to be written. Hell Without You is no exception. As for my inspiration for the story…
In general, I’m fascinated by the theme of characters “coming home”. I think because I’ve moved frequently throughout my life, and have spent a lot of my time feeling disconnected from my living location and the people around me. I’d personally like to have the experience of coming home to a familiar place, indefinitely, and though that’s not something that’s in the cards for me at this time, I enjoy exploring it on behalf of my characters. This idea is part of what inspired me to write Hell Without You, a coming home story where events are set into action by two characters’ return to their hometown.
I also drew some inspiration from my favorite coming home story of all time, the classic novel Wuthering Heights.

5) Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

Probably unsurprisingly, my favorite character is Donovan, the hero. I like him because he’s steadfast and honest, even when honesty is unflattering. He’s not afraid to admit what he wants and although he may have faults, he is unfailingly loyal, and to me, that is the ultimate positive quality.

6) How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

My least favorite character is Robert, Clementine’s step-father. He’s an extremely self-centered man who does not value the rights of others, but rather views everyone in terms of how they can benefit him. He is very manipulative toward the women in his world. Basically, he’s an ass.

7)      Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

I have hired help. I wouldn’t feel comfortable putting my work out there without an outside perspective. I get so deep inside my own head and my own feelings about my stories that I need someone objective to be honest with me.

8)      What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Read, of course. Besides that, I really enjoy martial arts and horseback riding, although right now I’m taking a break from both due to pregnancy.

9)      Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

Yes, I love to read a wide variety of books. A few of my favorite authors are Emily Bronte, Diana Gabaldon, Linda Gillard, Damon Suede and Ray Bradbury.

HELL WITHOUT YOU
by Ranae Rose – released September 5, 2013

Time changes everything, except what’s meant to be.

Seven years is a long time – long enough to transform Clementine from a small-town teenager with a broken heart into a woman ready to take on the world, but not long enough to make her forget about the man she was never supposed to see again. A temporary return to tiny Willow Heights thrusts her back into Donovan’s life and home, unearthing heartbreak and obsession that have stood the test of time.

He left seven years ago too, for war and other things Clementine can only imagine. Coming back to the town where he grew up in the shadow of poverty and drug addiction makes no sense, and neither do Clementine’s feelings for him. He could never forgive her for leaving, could he? Even if she had no choice.

Now, she has the freedom to choose … and so does he. Every day in Willow Heights makes it clearer: all he ever really wanted was her, and nothing will change that. Not even a taste of the hell that drove them apart in the first place.
