BLURB:
From the first time Sadie’s eyes met those of Brody McKenna in the hot Sierra Madre Mountains, theirs was a potent attraction—not gentle, slow, and easy, but hot, hard, and all-consuming. The daughter of a dysfunctional family, Sadie had dreams no man could wrench from her with hot sex and an all-consuming passion. She’d challenge this alpha male with all the strength she possessed. But her red hair, fiery temperament, and indomitable spirit obsessed Brody...and he knew he had to find a way to show her he was more than he appeared and convince her to make a life with him.

EXCERPT:
God, but I know what I don't want, but what is it that I want?
Sadie set the notebook down and let the pencil slide from her fingers. The light tap as it hit the ground startled Sadie from her musings.
What is it I want? Not a lifetime in the back hills of the Sierra Madre Mountains barefoot and pregnant. But Sadie knew her life wouldn't have to be that way. It could be what she made of it. Brody would give her that option.
Sadie peered out the window, her gaze settling on a form walking at the top of the hill. The men had disappeared hours ago. As the form moved closer, she realized it was a man and he walked with a limp. He stopped and wiped his brow then stared hard in her direction. It seemed to Sadie he knew she watched.
"Brody?" God, the man looked like him and he was hurt. She wasn't supposed to go anywhere without Lyn. But if that was Brody, she had to help him. If anything happened to him and she didn't go to him, she would never forgive herself. She looked to the door then back to the hillside.
"Please understand, Lyn. Please..."
Sadie grabbed her first aid kit and slipped through the open window. The sun beat down and the air stilled. Brody stopped when he saw Sadie. He waved at her but she wasn't sure what he tried to tell her. It appeared he motioned for her to come to him.
Caution was supposed to be the name of the game, but she wanted to race the wind to reach his side faster.
He can change into any form. You'll know it's the Chullachaqui because you'll feel cold.
I don't feel cold or chilled.
Her stiff spine and wavering emotions would make it harder to climb the hill to Brody, but she couldn't relax. An inner voice cried out restraint. Her stomach churned in trepidation. The closer she walked, the more determined she became to discover the truth. Cold settled slowly into her core. When she tried to stop and turn around, she couldn't.
No...
This wasn't supposed to happen. Face to face with the devil, she felt helpless to defend herself. He had won and she could do nothing to stop. The scent of rotting flesh assailed her.
"My, my Sadie, we finally meet." A devil's grin crossed his face and the smile showed rotting brown teeth. His stench made her retch.
"I'm not your Sadie." Lifting her face and wiping her mouth, she was surprised she could speak or breathe then she pulled on an inner strength. A strength derived from her time with Brody. A fierce hatred for this horrible being rooted in her head.
"Oh, but you will be. Soon, Sadie, soon." He touched her cheek and she tried to flinch away, but the coldness seemed to have frozen the movement. She found she couldn't move, couldn't walk or run from this demon. But he hadn't won, he couldn't. Brody would save her.
"Never."
Diabolical laughter emanated from him as he threw his head back. "I love your courage, your feisty nature. The first time I saw you in Peru, I knew you would be mine."

ReplyDeleteThat's a weird excerpt...intriguing, but weird! The cover is also interesting. With Sadie in the title, I assumed Sadie might be on the cover...but she's not.
ReplyDeleteYes, a bit weird but I wanted to put something in about antagonist, the Amazonian devil.
